breaking the sippy cup

posted 7th Jun
my 4 and half yearold still drinks out of a sippycup, and until recently it never really dawned on me that i shuld stop this. i have tried to give him the big boy cups and he lays on the floor screaming and throwing a fit. im having a new baby in about a month and half and i relly want to break this habit before she gets here. anyone have any suggestions on how to do this without making to much of a fuss?

is he drinking a straw or a regular sippy cup? If hes not on a straw, do that first..then move to open cups. Try to tell him how he's going to be a big brother and he has to be grown up for the baby. I dunno.

with my niece we started giving her cups that have a straw (with a lid) on it... and she is slowly starting to convert to a real cup

There really isn't a way that you can do it where there will be no fuss.  My cousins are 5 almost 6 and they are STILL using binkies

I would do what landy ray said and try the straws and you can try to "bribe" him.  I know it sounds awful but I had to bribe my cousins to use the potty.  I let them pick something out from the store and then told them they couldn't have it until they started using the potty.  From that day on, they didn't use a diaper.

Honestly, I would just give him a real cup from now on.  He's almost 5 and the sippy isn't needed.  He is at the age where he knows that throwing a tantrum will get him what he wants.

My daughter is the same she loves to lay down and drink.

Have you thought of a pop top bottle? As that way he can still lay down and drink but its not a sippy cup... We have about 8 water bottles in the fridge with pop top lids on them and we all use them.
