Nursemaid's Elbow

posted 22nd Jan
I am curious. For those of you who have had a child with nursemaid's elbow, did the doctor order x-rays? From what I've read, they're not usually necessary, and only done if a reduction doesn't seem to work, but when I took my daughter in with nursemaid's elbow a couple of weeks ago, they automatically took x-rays, even though I told them I was pretty nursemaid's elbow was the culprit.

My dad's an orthopedic PA and generally does an x-ray just to make sure.

Nope. They just felt it and popped it into place

I'm a little peeved about the circumstances around my daughter's incident. I was holding her hand when it happened, and she was leaning away from me, spinning on one foot. I actually felt it move in her hand. Having known several people whose kids have been through it, I knew that's what had happened. I called the local office, got her an appointment and took her in. Unfortunately the PA we saw didn't feel comfortable setting it, and the doctors had all left for the day, so all she did was send us to x-ray, and make an appt for us to see one of the doctors the following day. I asked if it was okay to leave it out of place for the night, and the PA said that it would be uncomfortable, but okay. The next day the office called me and said the doc I was supposed to see didn't feel comfortable reducing it either. They wanted me to wait another 24 hours (it had already been out for almost 24 at this point) to see the ortho. I was livid, and ended up driving her 120 miles to a bigger city. Unfortunately because it had been out of place for so long, there was a lot of swelling, which caused even more issues.

Dude... that's smurfing ridiculous. Don't feel comfortable setting it?! That's their smurfing job... damn.

Right? So now I'm stuck with a $185 bill from their office for basically referring us for x-rays that I didn't feel were necessary, on top of a bill for the pedi in the bigger city, and a trip to the ortho because the first pedi couldn't get it to reduce with the additional swelling.

That's nuts.   I'd file a complaint.

I honestly think what pisses me off the most about it is the fact that they expected us to wait another 24 hours to see the ortho. I'm supposed to make my incredibly active 2 year old girl walk around for 2 full days with a partially dislocated elbow? I was seriously pissed that they even suggested it. If I had known from the beginning that they wouldn't be comfortable reducing it, I would've taken her somewhere else.

I'm getting ready to write them a letter telling them exactly how I feel about the situation.
