How normal is it for preemies to have brain bleeds and what are the risks? my niece has a small brain bleed but the nurse didn't really say what it will cause or the risks of it..

My son was a 24 weeker and had a level 3 bleed on the left side. They thought he was going to be mentally retarded from it, but he ended up pulling through with just meds and is a healthy 3 year old today.

Some babies aren't as lucky, but it really just depends.

Generally most bleeds in infants don't require surgery because in most cases the vessels are so delicate they heal on their own.

As for the effects, there is really no telling because, every situation is different. The kid can turn out either completely healthy, or turn out to have a mental disability. It's an open ended scenario.

It's pretty common for preemies (depending on gestation) to have a brain bleed and sometimes even multiples. There's no telling what the effects will be because it depends on severity and location. It could be nothing and cause no problems or it could be something and cause anything from minor motor skill issues to severe mental retardation.
