My BIL needs help! At a loss here

posted 22nd Jan
BIL spent the night last night. He is 30 years old, unemployed, and an alcoholic. He (obviously) has no health insurance. He has been living at his friends house since September- his first time living without support of my DH and I or his parents.
I cannot have him in my home anymore because of his extreme alcohol problems and because he is too big of a financial burden on our growing family.

He is suicidal. I discussed with my MIL and DH quite awhile back about finding him inpatient treatment, but it is difficult to get those services here in Alaska if you do not have Medicaid. I just spoke to MIL (seconds ago) and she says they could try to help him out. They live down in Wyoming and I'm not sure of the types of programs they have down there, but... maybe there is something I'm missing? Some other possible solution?

If anyone has any personal experience with this be it first hand or by helping out another, please! I have been so worried for the past year. And now he had hit rock bottom in his depression and he really needs help, not just talk.

If you are unemployed, you cannot get on Medicaid. I think you might also have to have children to qualify- but I am not positive.

It's alright though. Things are out of my hands right now. I called up my Mom and we came up with a plan. He should be flying down there this weekend.

Not here lol anyone can get on it, ESPECIALLY if they don't have a job. That's what it's for.
Anyway, I hope he really wants the help and takes it.

Maybe I am misinformed then! Back in the day when I was on Medicaid (while in college) I had to provide proof of employment.

Maybe they just wanted to make sure you weren't making too much money? I had a job under the table and got on it without any proof. I told them I was unemployed(I wasn't cheating it because I didn't make enough at the time anyway) and when DH was unemployed he got on it too. It's there to help people who can't afford it, which is usually people without jobs

I had a case worker inform me that to be on Medicaid I either needed to be attending 40 hrs a week of work search or have a job. But this is all Alaska and 4 years ago so I things could be completely different.

I wish I could have been unemployed! I was going to school full time, waitressing and/or providing respite care five days a week, part time albeit.., homework, studying (med school nonetheless) going through a divorce, single mom, blah.

It was so difficult! I'm off on a tangent.

BIL is emotionally unstable and cannot get a job right now. He has been doing some work here and there for the family biz, but full time is not an option. Of course I want to kick him in the balls and tell him to grow the f up and get off his lazy a, but I am pretty sure it won't help him.
