Student loan question

My student loans defaulted, so I've been making payments since the summer so that they wouldn't take my tax return (Part of the payment plan agreement is that if I don't miss any payments, which I haven't, then after 10 payments it would move to a 'current' debt status, they wouldn't take my tax return, and they would drop their fees). Since I've been making payments, will they no longer accept a settlement for a lower amount? We haven't received DH's W-2's yet so I'm not sure how much we are getting back but in case it's not enough to cover the entire loan, I'm curious if I could settle the debt because I'm ready for this to be over. If it makes a difference, the loan wasn't a huge amount to begin with, so with interest I only owe $3162.

I don't know if its the same as it is with credit cards, but I was always told not to settle if you default because it smurfs your credit.

I would speak to my loan company. I assume they would take a settlement bit I'm no expert.

Lol yeah. DH settled, but it was a credit card. I don't know if it works the same. So like the other poster said I would talk to your loan company.
