It's an alternative to pads and tampons. It's a washable cup that collects the blood. Sounds gross but I've heard lots of great reviews from girls I know that use it.

A cup that goes into the vagina and catches the blood instead of a tampon. You dump, rinse, reinsert, and go on about your day about two or three times a day until your period ends, then sterilize it for next month.

They're amazing. My periods are shorter, less painful, less smelly, less messy, and more hygienic now. And my vag isn't dry for a week after my period because the cup only catches. It doesn't absorb all the natural lubrication and destroy it.

Plus, noble aches or horrible absorbent chemicals in your crotch!!!

I'm never ever going back!!!!

I read about it, but never used one. I read if you keep it in to long or have a REALLY HEAVY flow it can cause toxic shock syndrome alot more than regular tampons.

TSS is from the chemicals in tampons.

Can't get it from silicone.

You can get an infection if you don't change it for long periods (8-12 hours is norm. I've forgotten for 24hrs before when I accidentally fell asleep before emptying at bedtime and didn't wake til morning)

TSS can also be caused from other things not just chemicals I had a friend get it during pregancy and she wasn't using a tampon while pregant, killed the baby, and almost her so uh ya w/e

And TSS is actually an infection---any foreign body can cause an infection (including an improperly cleaned cup), but you're MUCH more likely to get it from porous and non-sterile tampons ---they're not manufactured to be sterile, btw)

You can't get it from silicone itself or from your own blood. So, properly clean your cup each time and you're MUCH less likely to get TSS.

is it easy to clean and like insert/remove? does it make a huge mess since it "collects" the blood?

It takes a little practice (2-3 days) to get the hang of it.

It's totally comfortable and I often forget I have it in til I go pee.

And it doesn't make a mess at ALL if you get a little practice. But since you only have to empty every 12 hrs, I've only had to empty it out of the house a few times. I just grab, dump, reinsert immediately when I'm in public and use TP to wipe my fingers til I can wash in the sink.

I only made a mess once---DH barged in and startled the smurf out of me when I was emptying it. He was supposed to be at work and DS was napping so I wasn't listening at all and nearly had a heart attack when he came in...that was fun!

It's soft. Have you ever seen a silicone cupcake liner? It's like that.
