Eating heathier.

posted 22nd Jan
I started working at a natural food market back in November (Sprouts Farmers Market), and it's inspired me to want to go green and along with going green, that means eating healthier. I'm making gradual changes because I am such a Walmart shopper, plastic bag user, eat a McDonalds here and there type of person and I want to make some switches. I am also motivated to cut back our spending on things like house hold items and food. Ideas on helping me meet my goals both with food and going green? I switched to cloth bags, using a Diva Cup/Cloth pads now, using cloth/rags to clean house, wash off counter, Chris face, etc. instead of wipes/paper towels....ideas?

I think those are all great ideas. Do you already cloth diaper (if you have one in diapers). I also use cleaning products around the house that are 'green' such as seventh generation for dish washing liquid & Mrs. Meyers instead of Windex, then I can just refill the bottle instead of throwing it out everytime it runs out.

Umm what else... cloth wipes instead of disposable?

You know what, he's ABOUT potty trained, but I thought of getting a couple prefolds and covers to get us by until we're finished training. They might help him finish off training even a tad quicker

As for wipes, yes, I use cloth ones...forgot to mention that. I just use warm water on those and them rinse them and toss them in with regular laundry. No sense in wasting more water to wash them separate either ya know?! Lol

Cleaning products...was looking at those in my store last night. Thought about making my own laundry soap and then using natural cleaning products from my store. Didn't look at refillable bottles though so that I am not throwing away plastic, but I'll have to double check that isle on my dinner break tomorrow night. I THINK I could make my own in those products too, but I'd have to look up some "recipes".

I know they even have those brands at Walmart, there's where I got them

I think a lot of this stuff you can make yourself, I'm interested in it myself but just haven't actually got around to it yet... lol. I know of some people that make their own laundry soap though & it works great.

I'm not like, super organic or anything though so I don't have a ton of suggestions, lol. The beginning of last year I bought a good water bottle & started using that instead of buying plastic water bottles, & I can't think of the last time I've had to buy any, so I'm proud of myself for that haha.

As for eating healthier, I just tend to buy more 'natural' stuff. Not necessarily organic, but sometimes. I really like Annies & Amy's products. Rarely eat red meat. Um... drawing a blank now

Cheaper helps! I am cutting down our budget quite a bit and need cheaper ways to get by. I am sure it's better than the crap that's used in Tide.

Yes! I am getting organic produce, and lots more pork, chicken, etc as far as meat goes. I feel like making a switch to Almond milk and non dairy product would be good too as well as making fruit smoothies each night with yogurt, spinach, fruits, milk, etc.

I wish I could do that, but I loooove cow's milk   I tried almond milk... my family only bought soymilk from when I was like age 10 & up, & I still never got used to that... so I can't do it. I like the fat free kind at least LOL. Good luck!! I think those are all great choices personally.

Amazing. So it'd last us 3-4 months if we do 1 load a day. Thank you

Thanks. I hope it goes as planned. It'll for sure take some time to get used to. I grew up on lots of dairy as well and that good ol' 2% cows milk..

Vinegar mixed with some water cleans anything. Soak vinegar with some orange peels for a week or two and it'll smell amazing.
