it's just phonetics. How it works, that's why those leigh names bug me so much.
I can get over Jaydens and Aiden, but the leigh names just reek stupidity to me

Quoting Vivian [♥]:" totally not hating here.. but I just don't get the "leigh" phenomenon. How do you say sleigh, like "in ... [snip!] ... don't say "slee" it's "slay". That's how leigh is pronounced. Technically Haleigh IS hay-lay, not hay-lee or even hal-lee."

It was originally a surname and I suppose that family pronounced it "lee" and it has just carried on.

Because Leigh is a surname pronounced lee.

It's still pronounced wrong though, surname or not. They just pronounced their last name wrong is how I see it.

I usually try to stick to original spellings, but my daughter is named Keirstyn. to me Keir would be less confusing.. I don't want people calling her kristen or kursten. then I added the Y because I didn't like the way an I or an E looked there... and now I catch so much crap over it from family who can't spell it and still pronounce it wrong :/

It's not pronounced wrong   it's a very old English surname.

"Before the last few hundred years the English language had no fixed system of spelling rules. For that reason, spelling variations occurred commonly in Anglo Norman surnames. Over the years, many variations of the name Leigh were recorded, including Lee, Lea, Legh, etc."

Ya, I think if the OPs friend is going for Halie, no mater how she spelled it, the girl will get Hailey a lot. Oh well, hopefully you only have to correct a person once

I will ALWAYS see it as being pronounced wrong. Just how I see it. Sorry.

So, technically, Leigh outdates our phonetic rules, so it doesn't apply.

hehe the whole conversation of phonetics amuses me. I have a friend who says "shedule" for schedule. he swears this is right. I ask if he rode a "shool" bus... he didn't laugh

For the record I'm not discounting Leigh as being pronounced Lee but anything tacked onto Leigh I pronounce Leigh as Lay. Such as sleigh and any other word or name with the ending of Leigh.
