Speech regression normal?

posted 22nd Jan
I'm not sure I worded that right. DD will be 18 months on the 24th. She talks a lot. She used to say a LOT of words. She repeats stuff a lot, and it seems like she says something new every day. For the most part.
She'll go a week or so like that, saying all kinds of words and repeating things, trying to sing songs, repeating her ABCs and 123s, and then it just switches up. She goes back to just making sounds and barely speaking at all. She went from singing "a b c d" all by herself, picked it up from one of her toys, to saying "o" in the rhythm of the song or saying "c o b e" or something weird.

Is that normal??

My son is like that and he's 17 months today actually! He'll say colours and shapes perfectly fine and then the next day he says different things for the same object and it's like "no dude, that's a triangle..."

I'd say she's just having a distracted day and let her keep going on learning how she's learning

It mostly just worries me because one week, she'll say a word clear as day and everybody that meets her can understand it. Then out of nowhere she just kinda starts mumbling the sound and no actual words come out. She had to have tubes put in last month so I was afraid maybe her ears are messing up or something

Maybe you can take her for a checkup in a few weeks if there's no improvement? It could just be an adjustment period like her ears are a little irritated or something... I know mine would probably feel a little odd after having something put in there and left

Yeah, maybe. She's had her ears looked at and they said they were good. They want to wait like 6 months to do her hearing test though, just so everything has time to settle and she can adjust I guess? I Figured more people would answer, but I guess it scrolled off the side bar pretty quickly lol

I would be a little concerned. But don't stress it. I would just make an appointment with the pedi to be reassured. I want to say it's probably normal, I think my daughter may have done that
