Wtf, Amish question

posted 21st Jan
I thought they were a nonviolent people? I was reading a book where they were beatimg their wives and kids in the name of God. Is that realistic or was it just something the author made up...?

The Amish, like other Anabaptists, are pacifists and their peace testimony is one of the most important in their belief system.

All my graduate research has been on pacifist religious communities like the Amish, Quakers, Brethren in Christ and Mennonites (among others).

I don't think it is a representation of ALL Amish. Just like not ALL Muslim men beat their wives, but unfortunately there is a majority of people who believe it because SOME Muslim men believe Allah directs them to do so in order to keep their wives obedient. Just as there are Christian men who believe the same way. I honestly do not think it is a one religion thing, I think it's a warped version of their truth to remain in control. Kinda like the Westboro bunch doesn't represent all Baptist

Amish are people and when people are involved bad things can happen. Is it the norm with Amish no. But can it happen, yes. They are human after after all and all humans make mistakes. I have never came across any like that and I live in an area with Amish folks.

I'm sure it depends. If they feel they're doing to make their woes and children obedient maybe. We live by a lot of Amish and I've not hear stories of them being violent. They're always very friendly. But you never know what happens at home. But I don't see any reason for them to beat their wives. I'd assume they're very obedient anyway.

They seemed pretty Amish to me.
To us "outsiders" they were always extremely friendly and polite. They make some amazing food. I'm not saying ALL of them around us beat their kids, but quite a few did.
