I know nothing about high school. I was home schooled. I mean, how many credits per semester? Are you taking a full course-load? Full time is considered 12 credit hours or more, but high school is probably different. I hope someone has answer for you.

When I was in HS, each class was 1 credit so no, I wouldn't have been considered a full time student.

You may want to call h&r block or something and ask. Idk either. My HS had 22/26 credits to graduate depending on what course was being taken.

Last year I was told at H&R that online school did not count as being a full time student. I was pissed!

Pretty sure it would count if it was college courses.

Don't quote me on this, but I wanna say they ask you that in case you have a 1098-t form which is a tuition statement that effects your return or to calculate your student loan interest rate tax deduction. I wanna say unless you are taking your GED with a loan or pell grant your online course doesn't count unless its college courses.

I'm gonna call H&R block tomorrow.
But I did read this on Turbotax

Who is eligible to take the American Opportunity Credit?

There are a few requirements necessary to qualify for the American Opportunity Credit as follows:
  • You paid qualified education expenses for higher education.
  • You paid education expenses for eligible students.
  • Eligible student is you, your spouse, or dependent for whom you claim an exemption.
  • Your modified adjusted gross income is less than $90,000($180,000 if married filing jointly).

You are not eligible to claim the American Opportunity Credit if any of the following applies:
  • Your filing status is Married Filing Separate.
  • Taxpayer is listed as a dependent in the exemption section on another person’s return.
  • You and your spouse were non-resident aliens.

My guess is no because it says-higher education. I read that as it needs to be for college.

That's just what the lady told me. My classes were through Penn Foster though so it wasn't like normal college credit hours...maybe that is the difference.
