14 month old speech.

posted 21st Jan
DD is 14 months and i'm just curious to see where she is with her speech! She says mommom, dada, baba, hi, buh bye, huh, what, why, ball, dog, pop pop (what we call grandpa), and NO! add shaking of the head no. Which is her favorite, right after "what?" add cocked face and hands in an I don't know position...

8-10 words at 15 months is what our pedi says is average. I wish DS would start saying things   He'll be 21 months on Sunday and still doesn't say any words. He's started being really vocal lately, though so hopefully it's soon!

Our pedi hasn't said anything about it really, I was worried she wasn't saying enough and have been trying to get her to say more lately! When should they start putting words together?

I think two word sentences is closer to 18 or 20 month milestone, but I'm not entirely sure since DS is a special case and he's my only child. Our pedi didn't say anything either until 15 months. There's something called an M-CHAT and it's a survey to see what all your child is and isn't doing. It's done at 15 months everywhere I know. DS was put into speech therapy after his because they were worried he might be autistic based on his lack of social and communicative skills. He's not, though. Just doesn't wanna talk, apparently

That's good! That's what I was worried about, she doesn't really have to use her words because me and DH just know what she wants, but the few times we don't she gets really upset because she can't tell us what she wants..Which is happening more often the older she gets. So lately I've been trying to get her to say more words, but if she is on target I won't push it too much!

A lot of kids are speech delayed solely because they don't NEED to talk because someone else always does it for them. My little sister didn't talk until she was almost 3 because all the older kids translated for her. DS doesn't talk because he doesn't want to and because we generally know what he wants, so he's never had to. I didn't even know he was speech delayed until his pedi asked how many words he used and I said none and he got all concerned, which upset me a lot lol.

I wouldn't push her to talk more but I would definitely encourage what she is saying. But I think she's right on track

That is great for 14 months! My son wouldn't say much of anything until just recently. He's 19 months. The past couple weeks his vocabulary has EXPLODED. He now knows most of his alphabet, and I smurf you not; can actually read some words out of his books. He can read "off, cold, in, out" out of his Opposites book. It's baffling. He still doesn't really say a lot unless prompted. But that kid loves his damn letters and reading!
