D&D toddler & tv time

posted 21st Jan
With your 20 month old how much tv time did you allow if any? Do you agree with parents that use tv as a way to preoccupy their babys?

Backstory: My sister has been putting her baby in front of a tv or computer since birth as a way to keep him quiet. For at least 4 hours a day he is placed in his room with the baby gate up so he can't leave the room while the tv is turned on & he is forced to watch spongebob all day.

I don't agree with this at all but I wanted to see what other mamas thoughts were on the subject

I have herd that Spongebob has been linked to behavioral disorders, I dont know if theres any truth to that though.

I don't agree with that she's doing. You can let your kid watch some tv but locking him in the room because you don't want to deal with the child is so wrong.

Forcing a child to watch TV is wrong.

I have the TV on Nick Jr, Sprout, or Disney Jr constantly, but as like background noise (because I can't stand a quiet house!), but I don't make them sit down and watch it, they glipse over at it every now and then as their playing.

On dd's 1st birthday we started allowing one half hour show a day, which is usually yo gabba gabba. ETA because we both interact with the tv and dance and sing together. She doesn't just sit there and watch it.

I think that's lazy. I don't think a child that young needs any tv.

Spongebob is an awful show.
I find it more of an adult's cartoon than a child's cartoon.
I think Spongebob is pretty much the same as Family Guy

at that age my son would maybe watch an hour of tv in the morning, but it was something that would actually teach him something not pointless spongebob..and then maybe another hour throughout the day at some point but that was it

DS is 20 months old and watches one movie in his playpen most days like Finding Nemo or The Lion King because I work full time and go to school full time and I need that hour and a half for homework. If I'm just doing reading out of my textbooks that day or something he doesn't watch tv but if I get my laptop out with him around he tries to take it from me and I can't get anything done. That's all the tv he gets though. Sometimes we have cartoons on while he's playing, but he doesn't actually watch them. He usually just plays and every now and then will dance along to music or something. I wish he didn't watch any tv at all but until I graduate in May there isn't much else I can do to keep him busy for an hour or so without having to constantly redirect him.

my daughter at 20 months watched some tv, but not a lot. and i never just sat her in her room in front of the television for hours and hours. she may have watched it while i cooked or something. she didn't even have a tv in her room. we listened to music a lot.

i think it's lazy of this person to sit the kid in front of the tv all day. plus, spongebob is a dumb show anyway.

ditto. DD is always moving and playing, but i keep the tv on because she nor i like the house to be quiet. she might watch it for a minute or so, then go back to playing.

I feel so bad for my nephew. My sister barely watches him. She is an extremely lazy parent. She put him in daycare at 13 months old because she didn't want to have to watch him 24/7. She ended up getting a part time job at krystals later though so now she actually needs the childcare
