Potty Training Autistic 4yo (Boy)

posted 21st Jan
I'm curious to anyone who has a child with SN, because in some ways it's all similar, but specifically kids on the spectrum and specifically boys. But I'll consider all advice at this point  )

Okay a little background about my son: He's nonverbal, but we are working on basic signs. He is getting a lot more word approximations and such lately but he is not able to tell us when he has to go potty. He has no tells when he does potty, like doing a pee dance or hiding. I thought he was ready to train, because he takes his diapers off and will bring you the old diaper and a new diaper. We got a potty chair, and some underwear. We have tried just about everything. Pottying on a schedule, big potty, little potty, bucket on the floor, cheerios and fruit loops in the toilet to "aim" at (all he did was try to dig them out of the toilet and eat :eyeroll ...I mean it's incredibly possible he is in fact NOT ready to potty train yet, but then I'm still left with the fact that he takes his diapers off which is wasting diapers (which gets expensive after awhile).

So, anyone been there done that? Advice? Maybe links to some good reading material that might help?

My nephew just turned 7 today and is Autistic. He just learn last week to go poop in the potty. It took a lot for training from his mother and his school to get him to do it. So be patience he will learn.   He did the same thing with his diaper, bring them to his mother when he had went in them.

Perfect timing as we speak...he hasnt even peed or done anything in this one and he keeps taking it off. >.< omg...I agree patience is key. I've learned the art of patience the last few years lol. Was there anything they did to help him understand a little better maybe?

My sister would take him there about once an hour. However he has two siblings close in age one is 9 months older and the other a year younger who I believed also helped him. His younger brother is also Autistic however is not as server as he is. He has gets rewards for doing it which helped too.

As terrible as it sounds...I am VERY much hoping that when my 11m old gets there he will see what she does and pick up on it. I believe thats partly whats been helping his verbal skills is that she has started babbling more, and making sounds, and he sees the attention she gets from that.

I mentioned to my son's therapist the other day that I am ready to potty train, although I don't think he is-he is 4 and non-verbal as well. They said that they check them every half hour on the dot and take them potty every half hour to start.Basically it is time training, and more the parent than the kid. If you find something that works let me know, lol
