Hyperemisis & Steroids... HELP!

posted 21st Jan
So, I have been on the Zofran pump for a few weeks now and home IV therapy. This is my second go around with HG and this time seems to be worse (or maybe I don't remember since it was 5 years ago). For the last week and a half my OB put me on thorazine, and it isn't helping at all (I'm allergic to Reglan, so that is out). My keytones are still high and I am so dehydrated they have a VERY hard time getting an IV started (like 4-5 sticks each time). The next step is being admitted to the hospital for IV steroid treatment. I am VERY concerned about the risks of this treatment. From what I am aware, the steroids can cause GD and therefore a higher risk of stillborn. I am so confused, obviously I want what is best for the baby, but at this point I don't know what to do.

So my question is this, have any of you been through the steroid treatment? What were the outcomes for you?

Steroids don't cause diabetes, but they can cause blood sugars to spike. I hope everything works out for you. Why are they giving you Thorazine? That's a typical anti-psychotic with lots of nasty side effects.

Thorazine is also used for severe nausea and vomiting. I'm not thrilled I'm on it either, trust me.

That's interesting. I never see it used at all anymore. Good luck with everything.

Nothin... zofran helped a little bit but nothing actually really helped. It was pure misery, pure hell for 5 months... it eventually started to improve and I eventually didnt have to even take the zofran. They can do cocktails of zofran & phenegran... together I heard worked better. I lost 40 pounds lived off rice and gatorade b/c I couldnt stomach water... I couldnt leave me house b/c smells made me look like a retard in public vomiting in isles at the grocery store and stuff... its tough i lost 5 months of my life... my job and everything... I had IV therapy every 2 days... on those days I felt decent... just remember that no matter how okay u feel one day dont over exurt yourself because the next day could be twice as bad as your worst day. & where ever you live I hope drs take hg seriously bc where I live in NY they dont.

I have an in home IV because I can't get fluids at all. I'm down 30 lbs in 6 weeks. This is my second go around with HG, and it just keeps getting worse. My dr thinks I exaggerate because Im fat, therefore I can't be THAT bad off :/ but my home nurses take me seriously because they see how I am on a daily basis... Where I'm constantly throwing up or gagging and look like death. The last time they treated me with IV Zofran and phenegren alternating every 3 hours and that did really good, but that's prob because they knocked me out. Can't really do that this time since I have a 5 year old now.

Those were the exact weights I was with DS pregnancy... Unfortunately the mirena and life in general made me gain a TON of weight :/ so now I went from 290 ish and am at 262 right now. I get that I'm overweight, but... Not healthy. Idk. I am just about to give up :'(

i felt like that too.. my dr tried to force me to get a picc line but I was too scared... and then was told my life was at risk and I needed to abort... yea... that clearly didnt happen,(i chaned drs after that) and here I am finally getting back to my healthy self and about to have a very healthy baby... where there is a will there is a way. No one knows how lonely, dark, depressing, and emotionally numbing this journey is except us, the girls that actually suffer severely from it... there were days where I wanted to break my bathroom mirror when i looked at myself b/c i was disgusting... i cried every day, all day... i was furious that everyone around me was living life and I was stuck in a recliner miserable. I am so happy to say that I gained all 40 pounds back and an additional 11 pounds since month 6... just remember the joy w/ your last battle   and boost breakfast essentials are a nice way to gain some pounds back and get lost nutrients...
