I am worried..

posted 21st Jan
Hi. I am currently 36 weeks and 4 days.. I just got a phone call saying I have Group B Strep. I have talked to my doctor about it, and she said it's normal for pregnant woman to get it.. But, I did some research on it, online and I read some pretty terrible things.. Like, your baby could have brain damage, infection, or possibly death. I don't want anything to go wrong when I give birth. They said they would run an antibiotic through my body once for 4 hours, and then again another 4 hours later before the baby is born to help prevent him from getting sick.. But, what if my water breaks and he comes before the antibiotic has time to go through my body?.. I need some advice. I really want my doctor to induce me early.. at like 38 weeks before my water breaks to give the antibiotic time to go through my body.. Because, I want my baby to be safe. He is in the 94th percentile. He is fully grown already.. Any advice.. or words of wisdom to ease my mind?

your doctor most likely wont induce you for that....but don't worry too much about it. Most women who are positive for group B strep give birth without any issues to themselves or the babies. The doctor knows what he's talking about when he says the antibiotics will be sufficient when given to you during birth.

I know it isn't bad to have Group B Strep and that there was nothing I could do to prevent getting it.. But, is there any way to like naturally 'get rid' of it?

GBS is extremely normal. I've had it with both of my children, it was never a problem.

I will tell you though, no Dr worth their degree will induce you at 38 weeks based on your concerns with the POSSIBILITY that your water may break and you'll have an extremely fast labor, thus not being able to get the antibiotics.

The brain grows the most in the last 4 weeks of pregnancy, so no your baby is not fully grown yet. And U/S can be off by a lot. I went in at 34 weeks to get an U/S they said he weighed 6 lbs 12 oz at that point( so at birth he's be over 8 lbs)..I had him at 39 +1 and he was only 6 lbs 7.5 oz.

Calm down
I was group b + with my last, and she ended up being born before I could even get to the hospital for antibiotics. She's fine. They just kept her on watch for 48 hours to make sure she showed no signs of infection. All was well.

No. You can't naturally get rid of it.

With my youngest, I had an active infection and they put me an antibiotics before labor, and then during labor.

Also....in all reality, the odds of your water breaking and you not being able to make it to the hospital are pretty slim. Especially it being your first.

Everything surrounding pregnancy and birth can all seem very scary! Just take comfort in knowing you are doing the best YOU can, and are gaining the information you need.  .

I wish you a swift L&D so you can enjoy LO!

I had GBS with my second. I did not get to the hospital in time to get the antibiotics -- I have EXTREMELY fast labors. My son is completely fine -- we just had to stay in the hospital and be monitored for 48 hours.

That makes me feel a lot better. Thank you.
