People nick naming your child...

posted 21st Jan
My family members and close friends are driving me crazy! From the start my husband and I agreed that if baby was a boy we would name him Harrison. We didn't tell anyone until we announced my pregnancy at 13 weeks. People asked our potential names and we told them. The general response was "oh we can call him Harry lol". I quickly let everyone know that it was not okay to call him Harry because that is not his name.
Fast forward to now, we found out its a boy and announced a few weeks ago his full name, Harrison Phillip. All my freaking family, my DH's family, friends, everyone keeps calling him Harry! They think its funny! I am starting to snap at people when they bring it up and he's not even here yet. His name is freaking Harrison not Harry! How do I deal with this? I have now started to ignore everyone but I am bothered by the possibility that they will always call him that.

Just politely correct everyone. Thats what I do.

We're naming this baby Charlotte, and I cannot tell you how many people have said "oh, we can call her charlie!"

I always just say, "No, her name is Charlotte, thats what she will be called".

People love nicknames.
Maybe find a name without such an obvious nickname like Harrison.
There isn't anything you can do to stop people, either ignore, get over our issue, or change the name.

People are gonna call him Harry...in school, later in life , etc.
You still have time to change his name if you hate the shortened version of the name you picked.

That's exactly why I didn't pick a name that can have a nickname.. I love the name Jonathan, but not John. Samuel, but not Sam.

You can keep telling them, but his whole life people will probably call him Harry for short
I love the name Harrison BTW.

I made sure to go over ALL possible "nicknames" before settling on a name for my kids! I also went over anything that I thought other kids could make up to be teasing smurfs! Like "Scott" could turn to NN "Scotty" OR teasing name like "snotty Scotty", KWIM?

my daughter's name is Kerriellah. when she was a baby everyone wanted to call her Kerri. me and SO hate that name. i would just always remind them that her name is Kerriellah, not Kerri. then i would give them suggestions of "approved" NNs.
