Cardio vs muscle building

I found a super cheap gym in my area, so I'm going to get a membership today.
I am about 60 lbs overweight.
Would cardio exercises be enough for me to start losing weight to see results fast, or would it need to be paired with toning/muscle building wrk outs too?

Since I am so out of shape, I thought it would be better to start with just cardio, and once I lose some weight then add in some muscle building exercises.

What do you think?
Have any of you lost a lot of weight with just cardio?
What is the best machine for that?
How long and how often should I start out going to the gym?

Cardio burns calories. Muscle building does too just because you're using energy to move, but that's not what it's really for.

I never ever do muscle building, because I like being soft and curvy. I run on the treadmill or do Zumba.

Cardio will work, but it's best paired with lifting light weights to stay toned. Otherwise you risk getting stuck with weighing less & not a noticeable difference due to loose skin. The toning from weight lifting helps keep the skin tighter over the muscles built & even though you may weigh a bit more on the scale, you'll fit into smaller sizes and be physically smaller.

I would work on the cardio and loosing a bit of weight first. Also, it'll help to build up your endurance. Give it a good two months I'd think. THEN once you start loosing some weight and feeling good about your workouts/endurance, start doing strength training 2 to 3 times a week. You should start out right now going to the gym 3 - 4 days a week. I prefer to run on the tredmill, other prefer the elliptical. Try and go for 30 minutes (just starting out) and go at a level that you can maintain for that 30 minutes. If it means walking 2 mph on the tredmill for 30 minutes, then alright, it's at least a starting point.

This is all my opinion. I go to the gym 5 days a week and run up to 5 miles during my carido days, and switch cardio vs strength training through out the week.

I used to date a body builder and he had me doing cardio paired with muscle exercises. You want to build muscle while losing weight...you'll get better and faster results instead of solely doing cardio.

Just ease into everything and don't overdue anything otherwise you'll start out getting extremely sore an needing to take time off. You'll just set yourself back that way.

This is true! Start slowly or you're going to dread it!

I guess I'll just try all the cardio machines to see which one i like best, and slowly add in weights?

I already know I'm gonna be really flabby, so I'd like to minimize it as much as I can.
Ugh I hope i can stick with it this time.
I think it will be better than trying to do the 30 day shred at home beause I will have a place to go without LO, I can afford it, and my sister said she will go with me so hopefully we will motivate each other to keep going.

I can't work out at home either. My suggestion is to go in the morning. Set the days you're planning on going and GO. Don't make excuses! Even if you're just going to walk the whole time, it's better than nothing! Seriously. I have to get up at 4:45 am to get to them gym by 5:50 and I have to be showered and ready for work by 7. I could easily just sit home and drink my coffee and watch the news (like I LOVE doing in the mornings), but it's more important for me to stay healthy, active, and toned! Even if your sister bails, YOU do it! Good luck mama! If it wasn't HARD, everyone would do it!

Also, stay hydrated and stretch ;)

Gahhhh bless your heart for waking up that early. I used to have to take SO to work and leave the house by 4:30, not fun.

This is the first time I've ever joined a gym so I hope it will make it easier for me to go. I know once I start seeing results I will get more motivated and I'll get addicted to it, I just gotta push through the first few weeks.

And plus since I'll be payin for it, that will help me want to go so I won't waste money lol

Don't forget about eating healthy too! i'm not sure how your eating habits are now, but cutting out soda and fast food alone will drop you a few pounds. Added to excercise it helps tremendously! Drink at least 64 oz of water a day. That is 8, 8 oz glasses.

Yea I har cut out most junk food, I usually eat healthy anyways but I've replaced white with wheat, I don't drink juice or soda, rarely any sweets, ect. But I do need to cut out processed foods. And drink more water
