emergency room? help!

posted 21st Jan
Dd will be 13 months old in a week and has been throwing up constantly for about 2 hours now. Can't hold down water, kinda lifeless, but no fever. She has thrown up a LOT though and we have movers coming in the morning to pack and ship our stuff back to the mainland so I'm afraid she's going to get dehydrated and I won't be able to take her to a doctor tomorrow. Should I take her into the er to make sure she's not getting extremely dehydrated? We are making a 15 hour trip in 2 days with just me and her. Please help, this is so stressful and she's so sick :/

If you won't be able to go tomorrow, go today.

I would definitely take her in. that long of a trip, and her acting the way she is after two hours of puking(acting lifeless) she might already be dehydrated.

My little one is still BFing so last time he got sick we didn't have to worry too much about dehydration, but it can still be a major concern. Give her a wet rag to suck on, Popsicles, whatever you have to do to keep some fluids in her. Since you have a long trip ahead of you, it might not be a bad idea to go to the er, but I don't know what they are going to be able to do for you. They are unlikely to give a 13 month old medication.

I agree that there's probably not a whole lot they can do for you right now. Typically stomach bugs only last about 24 hours. Sometimes you get unlucky, but most of the time it's gone as fast as it started. Recently my 2 year old had the stomach bug and he puked non-stop for about 8 hours. He couldn't keep water down.

What we did is basically covered us in towels (I got sick of changed every 5 seconds) with a cup of water or watered down apple juice next to us. He'd puke.. i'd have him take a sip or 2. Wait a half an hour, try to talk him into drinking more. Sometimes I'd use the straw to squeeze some juice or water in his mouth. Wait another half an hour and then try something solid. We didn't make it to the hour mark until he stopped puking.   Then all of the sudden he said he was hungry and drank the entire cup of juice and ate 2 pieces of bread.

Keep on top of the fluids. They do have the pedialyte freezer pops. In my experience, they hate the pedialyte because it tastes like salty juice. IMO, i wouldn't take LO in yet. The ER is filled with sick people this time of year. As long as she/he's peeing, she's most likely ok, just sick.

They can give her IV hydration if necessary. That alone can help with the nausea.

Sorry for the late response, life has been hectic. She threw up for around 8-10 hours off and on, didn't eat or drink much the rest of the day, but was ok. Her dad refused to take her to the doctor anyway   I took her to a medic and a nurse (both friends that live down the street) and got their advice and what not. Then she gave it to me... put me in the ER. I gave it to my neighbor and my cousin, put my cousin in the ER. Whatever it was, was a NASTY bug. I was violently sick from about 10 PM-6:30 AM and then had to fly out that night lol. Gah it was awful.

So are you back home now and the move went well?

We are back home! We're here, our stuff should be here in a little over a month... hopefully lol. It's just nice to be back to a place where I have a car and can properly take care of/provide for my child without having to rely on her POS sperm donor or my friends.
