re: 4 under 5?

posted 21st Jan
You know I belong to this club   when my 4th arrived the elder three were 4, 3, and 13 months. Now we are expecting #5 (in June) and the kids are 5 1/2, 4 1/2, 2 (28 months), and 1 (15 months tomorrow).

I also homeschool so they're all home a lot more despite the elder two being "in school."

I love the closer age differences (my first two are 12 months apart, 3rd and 4th are 13 months apart) more than the larger. I've found that once the kids catch up to one another things are much easier to balance, which happens so much quicker with smaller age differences as I'm sure you've seen.

I do think the if people go crazy in parenting has a lot more to do with the people and the individual kids' personalities than the number of kids or ages. I know people with just one child that definitely have it harder than I do (based on that child's personality) of course we have no control over that and in the end just make the best of whatever situation we are blessed with   and of course you're constantly learning and adapting to what is best for your family.

You are always the first person I think of when I start talking about lots of kids close together haha.

How is home schooling going? Are you worried about having that and a 3 month old come next fall?

Alexa will be 4 when the next is born (hopefully!) and she was supposed to go to 4K but they got rid of it, so now I will have to work with her at home an extra year...Im ok with that, I didnt really want to send her anyways, but that means I will have all 4 at home. Makes me a bit nervous.

What is one thing that has been the hardest for you so far? Do you guys have a daily routine?

Homeschooling is going well, I am nervous about having both the older two on more structured lesson plans next year (versus currently my eldest daughter has the more structured plan and my son's is much more adaptable) but I'm sure we'll figure it out. I actually think it will be easier with the baby being a little older when we start the Fall school year versus being a newborn so hopefully we'll have our schedule for family of 7 and have adapted a lot by then.

We do have a schedule daily but of course with kids you do have to adapt based on what works better some days versus others as well with younger kids as I'm sure you know.   You will see though 4-5 seems to be the magic age where kids become a lot more helpful/self sufficient too though so the older ones being able to help like that does make a huge difference. My older two were good helpers and loving with their little sibs before but the age and size and general maturity difference from 3-4 is a lot bigger than I realized till we had it.

Hardest thing is making sure you still have the special time with each child I think, juggling the older kids having more out of the house activities (even if they're not in school) with the littles in tow, and just the general fun first logistics (like grocery store trips, first time out alone with 4), but all that passes just like it always does and you're a pro in no time   (though if you're like me you may look back and think wow I had so much time when it was just 2, 3, etc. at times) and just like with parenthood of any number of kids the rough days pass and are much fewer than the awesome ones.

Of course take all the above along with the fact I've had 4 and am expecting my 5th so as the other ladies mentioned, sanity may not be quite as there as it used to be   but I'd rather be crazy and happy anyway than sane and bored
