re: If you broke down all your yearly expenses ...

posted 21st Jan
With the car repayments it was a necessary evil unfortunately, my old 13 year old car died unexpectantly and I just did not have the money to cover costs ($4000). Because we had crappy credit we could only get a loan on a brand new car, so we got the cheapest brand new car on the market lol.
We recently got a gym membership for SO because he's morbidly obese and his doctor thought that it would be best if he got a PT and dietician ... which are both provided at this gym.
Internet and phones are significantly more expensive here anyway.
My mortgage is for $365,000 (pretty standard for Aus), and somehow I can't imagine me paying that off in a hurry.
Rates are land and water rates ... these are $353 and $213 respectively a quarter.
Rego is car registration ... each car is about $250.
License is driving licenses.

We don't have to register our car yearly or our license - we get tags which I think are about $30 a year & our license every 4 yrs & that is about$20? Can't remember even. Mortgage here varies greatly depending on where you live....as in anywhere from $20k through $500k for the same sized home. We are older though Dh is 40 & I am in my 30's so we've had a long while to get stuff paid off. Dh also had some good investments, so we had a jump start there as well. At one time he made about $60k in under a year on one of them. We were quite lucky. We also lost a LOT when Sept 11th happened & stocks tanked - because one of our investments went under completely, so there is no recouping that. But anyway. I never knew anyone before Dh that actually bought stocks. If you have good luck, they can do a world of good for you, but they can hurt you just as bad. We did alright, more good than bad for us, but it would have been very different if we hadn't pulled a bunch out to by our house (we probably would have lost most of it - as it is, we probably did loose an equivalent amount in appraisal value of our home as compared to when we bought it in 99 & prices were high). Then when we were both working we had a great income, so we paid the house off so I could stay home & we'd be totally solvent with one income & be able to maintain financial safety.

Your monthly income is just short of double your expenses, how can you consider yourself broke? That's silly :-/

Our monthly expenses are around $6,994 - that includes mortgage, car payments, fuel, groceries and daycare. and our income together is $8,666. We consider ourselves well off. The only time we struggle is when we forget we have something coming out lol, but we are getting better about it.

Because I had a huge amount of overdue bills, my personal loan, and my insolverancy debt which I have nearly paid off (paying off the last of my personal loan on friday). All this snowballed down from when SO was unemployed and I was only getting 30 hours a fortnight in my old job. I am just really hoping that over the next few weeks/months we'll be sorted.

I only make that much if I work weekend evenings/nights.

Are you working fulltime? Here in Ohio, you could survive off that easily.

Oh I forgot about daycare. That will definitely eat up someone's wages! It is insane how much people have to spend for childcare.

Because I'm in nursing school, I automatically am qualified for nurse's aid jobs. One of my jobs doesn't even pay $10/hr, but the other way pays more and has great differentials (do you get differentials?). Even still, it would be nice to have $15/hr as a base wage!

Not for working nights or weekends. You get time and a half once you're over 40 hours and holidays are double time.
