Dredge both sides in flour and then seer both sides in a VERY hot pan. Use a tiny bit of oil.

Throw carrots and onion into the bottom of the crock pot and put the roast on top. Cook on low for 6 hours for the most tender roast. The drippings, mixed with the flour you dredge it in will make a great gravy.

I forgot to add that you can season it with seasoning salt and pepper or a package of onion soup mix/dip.

I don't know how homemade you want it to be, but I use one of those McCormick slow cooker pot roast seasoning packets mix it with a cup and a half of water (you can add more as it cooks if you need to), cut up a few stalks of celery, an onion and two cloves of garlic and let it cook until the meat is falling apart.

I usually put the roast in the crock pot and fill it to almost covered with water. Then I add one to two packets of onion soup mix. It usually comes in a box of two packets.
I let that cook for about 3 or 4 hours then I add baby carrots, celery, red potatoes and occasionally some cabbage. Then I let it cook for another 3 to 4 hours or however long it takes for the veggies to be soft and the meat to fall apart.
