anyone have a coombs positive baby?

posted 20th Jan
My son was born on the 11th of this month with jaundice caused my blood type incompatibility, after 3 days in the hospital and a day in a bili blanket the Dr let us go home with his levels at 11 as long as we followed up with her within a few days. So Friday they did a heal stick and his levels were up too 18.8 and the Dr wanted him in the hospital ASAP. So all day Friday and night he was in the blanket and the incubator and his levels dropped to a 13 so they took him out of the incubator staying in the blanket and the next day his levels were down to a 12.1 they stopped all phototherapy and said if it goes down to a 11 we could go home the next morning (today) well this morning his levels went up to a 13 and he's back in the blanket
I'm so frustrated with all this. And I miss my other 2 kids like crazy
My husbands brother who is a nurse told him to have me give him formula and breastfeed the Dr said it wont help cuz he was born with the jaundice it doesn't have to do with breastmilk. I was just wondering if anyone did try the formula and if it helped?

It's a common misconception that formula helps with the jaundice because breastmilk is not enough..keep nursing him, it's the best for him..
Hope he is better soon!

My son had pretty bad jaundice when he was born. The best thing for them is to have as much fluid breastmilk or formula as often as possible to flush the system.

DS pedi actually encouraged me to keep nursing him more even with his jaundice. Unfortunately my milk still hasn't come in at the time we started his light therapy so I was supplementing with formula. It isn't about what they are drinking but how much they are drinking. I think they suggest formula because it is guaranteed that they can get however much they are going to eat where milk supplies may not always have the amount. If you aren't having any supply issues I would just keep nursing.

This!! The nurses pushed for that at our hospital when I had A and the doc said I could if I wanted to but Breast milk was the best for jaundice!

Thank you. I wanna keep breastfeeding only. My milk came in pretty fast and he gets plenty, I guess his brother told him that breastmilk holds on to what he needs to get rid of. So formula will help flush it out. He's just making me feel bad cuz he says I need to try every option. (My husband) The Dr said it's just the antibodies are destroying his red blood cells causing more bilirubin to build up. I really hope this ends soon

Could you ask about having a billi blanket at home? You would still have to go in for counts though but I know they do that alot here.

They offered that today and I was so excited! But something about outa being a weekend and tomorrow a holiday that it would be hard to find someone to do the paperwork or something like that.

Yea   I know our medical supply place usually has a number you can call on weekends but idk if they would offer that at any of your local supply places.

I did this with DS as well.

OP-
I would maybe see about home health care coming. DS levels were really high and he probably should have been in the hospital but his pedi had already ordered home health to come and set stuff up. If his levels hasn't gone down at all then he would have had to go in but luckily they started going down. The home health would come by everyday to get his heel pricks and check on him. Then came and packed everything up once he was at an appropriate level. I probably would have freaked if we had to stay in the hospital all that time. And if he was home it would give you the freedom to keep feeding him how you want to without the pressure of people.

DItto! They told me DD would most likely have jaundice because her blood type was incompatible with mine and she got bruised up pretty badly during birth...they told me to nurse as much as possible so I did and she wasn't jaundiced at all!

Thank you everyone. I will definitely look into the home care. I don't think I can handle staying here much longer its definitely hard being away from my other 2 boys

Callan was in a bili blanket for 8 days at home (and 2 in the bed at the hospital) and finally got his numbers low enough to get rid of it. He was strictly breastfed.

Can you rent a blanket or bed for home use until his numbers are better?

Good luck!
