someone please help me (ASD)

posted 20th Jan
how do I start potty training my 3 year old who was diagnosed ASD and is non verbal? He constantly wants to play with his penis, how do I get him to stop that?? I have really tried everything. It's so frustrating because he will take his clothes off and just sit there and play with it all damn day. And just now, he whipped it out and pissed on the floor. I don't think I was made for this smurf. I don't even knoww what to do anymore with him.

don't rush him into it, he will be even more resistant toward training. keep introducing it gently and when he's ready, he will start to learn.

He probably isn't but I am so sick of cleaning piss out of my carpet. This has been happening since he was 1. I just can't take it. It's the same thing over and over and no matter what I do, it doesn't work. I've duct taped his diapers on, put covers over them, over alls, onsies, backwards diapers, backwards covers, onsies over pants, diaper covers over pants....nothing is working

I understand that....but he is showing signs of readiness....whipping it out and pissing is one of those signs. He brings me a picture when he pees in his diaper and i sit him on his potty and go through all that.

I'm sorry. I went through a similar issue but my son was holding his poop in until nap or bedtime then playing with it. I tried everything to keep his clothes on during that time too. Maybe a belt that he cant undo? You could also try putting a drop cloth down and putting the potty chair in the living room.

ASD can be very frustrating. With time and the correct therapy it will get better. Honestly boys like to play with their penis. Although it is difficult to deal with and see you have to just go with it. I would recommend "treats" to get him to potty train. If he likes rice krispie treats, everytime he goes in pee or poo even a little bit give him a treat. Not for any other reason but for potty. If you start give rice krispies for say cleaning his room he will choose to clean his room. With ASD expect the time to potty train him to take longer.

Yep thats what we had to do. DS is 5 and just now going about 80% pee on the potty. No poops yet. We did get him to sit once on the potty for a whole book in an attempt to poop but he isnt regular yet so we have no cues to go off of.

We started with m&m's but then my husband accidentally gave him a couple for snack so we had to implement chocolate kisses.

Eh.... I'm going thru the same thing... And he's 6. He is also pretty much non verbal and has asd. I normally make him go potty it least every 30 minutes, and that does help some, not a lot but some. He won't normally take his pull up off ( good nites in his case ) unless he pees in it, but then he normally brings us a clean one. He has actually gotten pretty good about peeing in the toilet, its the pooping we are having our biggest issue with, and you can never tell him go per, because the child will pull down his pull up and piss wherever he is lol. He also plays with himself a lot, but everytime he does we just try to tell him that is something he does when he's alone and he needs to only do that in private. Sometimes he stops, other times he stares at me like I'm speaking a foreign language. To me it sounds like he is definitely ready for the potty, you could try what I do. Warning though... It is very very very time consuming, but how I look at it if it works I'm all for it lol I don't care what I have to, because like you, I'm completely over having to clean piss off of smurf.

And I also forgot, everytime he uses the potty make a huge deal out of it. Everytime bubba uses the potty you would think the greatest thing in the world has happened in our house, we jump up and down and cheer and dance and he loves it.

honestly it just doesn't sound like he is ready. Cylus wouldn't go unless he got to stand at the big toliet. Also him playing with it is completely normal.

Him playing with his penis is normal, yes. BUT he does it all the freakin time. He would do it all day long. His doctors even said it wasn't normal

Really?? Thank god someone else has a child like mine because every one of his doctors and therapists have said it's completely not normal for him to be doing that but I seriously cant get him to stop. I have literally tried everything that has been suggested. He's a genius when it comes to problem solving.

My son just started "playing" with his too. Like during a show we're watching he'll move his pull up down to look at it, smack it around, pull on it. Hes been putting his testicles on things too. I dont think its a pleasure thing just a curious thing, oh look a built in toy type thing. I just keep reminding him its called his privates because he needs to do it in private. His room or when he takes a bath alone. So he runs into his room and dances around naked, swings his hips so it moves.

I have to laugh because I dont think they grow out of that one
