birthday cakes and gifts

How many of you bake your own kids birthday cakes? I know some moms who do fondant cakes and omg they do a wonderful job. I love to bake and want to start doing cakes for my kids in the future. Might be alot more fun and possibly cheaper and tastier. We usually do bakery cakes.we have never spent over 25 bucks for one but they still were pretty. This yr my kids are more excited about the cake they want then gifts and pretty much tell me every single day lol. My soon to be 5 yo daughter wants a barbie cake made into a barbie doll design. Ive seen one for 35 bucks that is perfect for her.my son wants a spiderman cake. Wish i could make it for him. I want his to be moe of a fondant design with the spiderman coming off of it with the action figures on top his est maybe 60 not sure. We factor in all cost for bdays tho. Decorations,cake and gifts. Usually do either 1 big gift for them that is like 100 or 4-6 smaller gifts equaling that. We are going to start throwing parties for them since school starts soon but we usually take them out like wherrver they want like zoo,chucky cheese,kids place wherever fun,then out to eat then normally stop to let them pick up new outfits(my girly girl looooves that part) then home for cake icecream dinner and gifts:-)

my mom said she made it in a pyrex bowl put the cakepan as a cover fliped it shoved the barbie in it and decorated it.. lol i told her there had to be more to it then that.. she said craft stores should have everything even a special pan in the cake section..
