Actually it depends on what state you're in.

These days, all you have to do is contact vital records, explain that you want to do a name change and they will send you the paperwork. You fill it out, have it notarized and send it back in. They will then send you an amended birth certificate and you use that and the original to have the social security card changed. I had my sons changed at 9 months old and I was sure to keep the originals of everything before the change and it has proved useful;

I have yet to find a state that says you have to do it any differently and even if it IS the case, people change their kids names all the time, that's why in *most* states, it's free before a year old.

Thanks   I feel really happy about this decision. I don't think it's weird either. It's not like I'm changing my 9 year old's name. Now thatd be weird. I'm sorry you regret your son's name. I think Caleb's a nice name though.
One of the big reasons Hailey didn't feel right is I feel it doesn't age well. Charlotte will age so well and I love Lottie as a nickname. Also there are so many Haileys. While Charlotte is getting more common, I have yet to meet a Lottie, which is what she's going by

Here is the law from her state which says nothing different about a child being less than 1 year old.

Ok...and? I don't really care, I know what I found out through research and from my own experience doing the same thing.

You live in a different state than her, are you dense?

Obviously not since I have stated that I have done my research and I haven't come across something other than what I experienced. Just because it doesn't say anything about a child being under a year old doesn't mean that it's not the case - she needs to just call and get her information, I never go by what I see on websites anyway, half the time a site will state something and then I call and it's completely different or my situation doesn't apply to that, what-have-you, why do YOU care?

She's very invested in this. She just had to Google. I've heard from other parents here in Michigan who changed their child's middle name that the process was very easy, just like you said.

Lol, obviously she cares way too much about something that she has never experienced and probably won't ever do - but yes - it's pretty easy as long as you don't wait a super long time. I had mine all squared away with a new social security card in less than 6 weeks, free of charge - I hope it goes just as easily for you!

I know people who have changed their kids' names as late as three years old. At seven months, it isn't a big deal.

I announced it on Facebook since most of them are on there. Those who aren't, I will tell in person. I told my paternal grandma yesterday and she loves the name Charlotte.

Thanks for that. I don't think so either. She's only 7 months, it's not like I'm going to scar her for life.

I'm glad you found a name that suits her! I love the name Charlotte!
Nothing weird about changing your kid's name. There are actually several people on here who have done it.
