Exclu. Pumping

posted 20th Jan
I have an 11 day old who didn't latch from the beginning b/c my nipples are flat. I used a nipple shield and she sucked my nipple through it causing major bleeding and damage (LC calls her "barracuda"). So I decided not to go that route if I wanted to pump as well which I couldn't do for a while. Well I ended up giving her formula b/c my colostrum didn't come in til day 5 past my hospital stay. Now I pump every 3-4 hrs I would do 2-3 but I get no sleep and I don't have time with everything else I do so I mainly do every 3hrs. She's gotten used to drinking 2.5-3 oz every 2-3hrs. and I just started pumping 2 oz today how can I boost my supply even more to meet her needs and have left overs?

You need to pump every 2 hrs for at least 15 min each side. I had a double electric pump to save time. Are you drinking LOTS of water and eating healthy/plenty including oatmeal?

You can also try fenygreek mothers milk tea and blessed thistle. No instant oatmeal

You can try those things but as soon as you stop them your supply will go back down. If you're not pumping every time your baby takes a bottle, your supply is never going to fully establish.

Actually no.. that could be it. I've lost 23lbs in one week I have no appetite so I barely eat. My family says I look skinny and trying to force me to eat more. I do drink a lot of water. I'm not sure what's wrong with me... could be my emotions.

I'll start pumping for 15mins each whenever she eats it's so much work and I really want her to get the best nutrients.

If you're having a hard time, it could be baby blues. Maybe you should call your ob, especially if your friends and family are noticing it. Sorry hun, it's hard right after a baby!

I'm going to let my MW know soon... my emotions and stress are really stalling my milk supply. I have major baby blues so I don't know what to do about it so that I can make more oz and get better.

I know pumping is very hard! It's harder than just nursing! Maybe you can try having her latch again? If you are 100% wanting to continue giving her breastmilk past a month or two, you just have to do it right, there's no other way. Nursing is a perfect system, too many variables will mess it up.

Thank you for your advice... I'll try my hardest.

By doing it right, i mean either nursing on demand, or pumping everytime baby takes a bottle.

I had no appetite for a couple weeks after my son...I had lost a lot of blood and was really anemic. Are you taking iron supplements and/or your prenatals?

Same here...they were really flat with my first so he had a hard time latching, but after using nipple shields for a few weeks they drew my nipples out so I had no trouble.
