They lost my son

posted 20th Jan
My husband went to pick up my 5yr old autistic son from his preschool/language enrichment program yesterday. It's held in a K-5 school, 2 floors, 2 long straight hallways. It has a field to the back with a large play center, a bus lane and parking lot out one door, the road out the other.

They didn't know where he was. My husband was a few minutes late and the parents had already all started going into the class to collect the kids (only 12 students). The door was open. His aide was busy with another child. He left the room. When my husband went in, he asked where Kieran was, and no one knew. They thought he was still in the room.

Luckily, he was just down the hall and they found him quickly. We will be bringing this up at his IEP meeting on Tuesday. He is verbal, but not a lot of functional speech and can't answer questions. (such as "What's your name?" or "Where are you supposed to be?").

I am literally numb. I'm just so disappointed and scared.

I'm so sorry! I know things happen but that should not have been aloud to happen ( the door open? I think you would be safe to bring it up before his IeP to tell you the trooth

I've already emailed his entire team (therapists, teacher, school, etc) to let them know what needs to change and how we are going to do it in my mind, and to give them a chance to come up with thier own idea's for a solution. I want them coming to that meeting with answers so it NEVER happens again.

My first question, is the school a locked school?

Meaning no one can get in unless through the office.

That wouldn't make me to worried but it still would scare the crap out of me.

My son went to a locked down school but they were unable to take care of his needs so he had to be moved to another school that's not so secure. We just walk in and out, never check in at the office, they never stop us. Nothing.

Now I'm sure they just know it's Jacob's family. but it scares me!

I would most definitely bring it up, let them know your upset and that is something that needs to be in there so they can avoid it.

That's just terrible.

I'm lucky that my autistic child is to scared to go without permission.

When my dh came home he was pissed! I thought, "Ok, it's not good, but he must be over reacting" So I called a friend who has a son in the class who helped dh look for Kieran. She confirmed that they really had NO CLUE where he was, that the aide thought he was still in the room.

The class dismisses as the rest of the school is coming in from recess. The halls were totally packed with kids getting out of thier winter clothes and he was at the far end of the hall. I think he was looking for us since dh was a little late (I usually am one of the first there and I hide around the corner so he can't see or hear me or he disturbs story time)

No lock down. Parents come and go all the time. It's like a split level - you come in and the boot room is the "main floor" and then from there you go either up the stairs or down. His class is down stairs, the office is upstairs. His class is the first class at the bottom of the stairs, if he goes up the stairs on that side no one would ever even see him because he passes no other rooms. He was at the far end though, which opens out and the playground is to the right and the road about 100 meters to the left, not fence aside from a short metal railing that goes around the perimeter.

Oh that would just piss me off. Definitely bring it up to me.

It's like last week. They didn't give my son lunch, and we all know kids and routines, they thought because he refused that he wasn't hungry. It was the opposite, they were at lunch at the wrong time, it was recess time. So the vice principal took him to class, never told his aide what happened and didn't tell them that he didn't eat lunch.

So when the end of the day came, my son flipped his lid because he hadn't eaten lunch and you can't get on the bus without lunch right? So he attacked his aide, who called the principal and promptly suspended him and I had to come and haul him out of there he was so distraught.

Yeah I yelled at them while I was there. And we had to immediately come up with a new plan for what happens when the normal teacher is gone.

Just keep on them that is crazy! I'd be flipping out completely!

I'm like freaking out over here!

I remember when mine was very non verbal, and I just can't believe they would do that. And they knew he was gone and didn't do anything?

I just wish they could get it!

I mean, I know, we live it, we are more used to it, but I explain everything to them step by step. I don't do it for my health, I do it because they NEED to know and they NEED to pay attention.

Some days I think we need to print a list of instructions on the back of our kids shirts
