Vegetarians and Vegan mommies

posted 19th Jan
Do you raise your kids on a vegetarian or vegan diet as well, or do you feed them a omnivore diet?

why & why not?

I'm a vegetarian. I only use vegan cosmetics but I don't have a vegan diet. My ex ate meat and we often eat with my family (they live upstairs) and they all eat meat so I'd feed DS meat with them but I'm wondering if I should be feeding him more what I'm eating. The choice is going to be his but I feel like I should encourage vegetarianism more... Anyways just curious on your views and how you do it with your families to whoever wants to share

That's a lifestyle choice that I would allow my child to make when they are old enough to.

We feed them our vegan diet. Because its what we feel is best for them, just like a family who eats meats. So far we have no had any issues.

I'm going to let him choose when he's old enough, but I'm wondering if I should cut back/out meat until he can choose because I find it's healthier and more beneficial and it'll get him used to it if he does choose this lifestyle (since so many say the only reason they eat meat is because it tastes so good).

not carnivore, lol but omnivore diet. We eat fruits, veggies, grains, dairy, and meats.
When my kids are older and they want to eliminate anything from their diets they can, but at their current ages, they are too young to know.

I've been vegetarian since I was very young, but I have never pushed it on my daughter. In fact, she loves chicken! But if she decides to be vegetarian/vegan later on in life I'd support it. My family always gave me a hard time.

That's good, So many have told me that it's unhealthy to feed children on a vegan diet but I'm learning that it really isn't & I love hearing about families who live by one   I used to think veganism was so difficult, but it seems great

Yeah, that's what I'm doing right now but I'm also introducing him to the food I eat, I just haven't cut anything out either. & my family too, they don't think it's healthy to eat meat but like many they haven't looked into it and assume that I'm not getting any protein or anything in my diet

It's the opposite! It's so healthy! My children are as well as my DH and I are all in excellent health. We don't eat anything processed either. You are what you eat!

Exactly ;) and that's one of the reasons I'm thinking I should be feeding him more of what I eat. I've been a vegetarian for years now and I want to go vegan, my only concern with it though is the time to make food, because I'm in college all day and don't cook as much during the week :/
May I ask, are you against animal cruelty? or is it mostly for the health benefits?

I think you're doing the right thing..it's whatever you feel is best for your child. And yeah, my family is always concerned I don't get enough protein or that my iron is low etc., but I know what to eat in order to keep healthy.

Thanks
and yeah exactly, many people seem to forget that there are so many other sources of protein. And mine worry too because my iron is low, but I've always been anemic and my anemia was even worse when I did eat meat so.. :/ As long as you know what to eat and you're not depriving yourself of anything

No it's about the health benefits. When I was in college I had to write a paper on organic foods and farming and became so disgusted by what is in food that I totally changed my diet. And it is time consuming at first, after a few months its just like anything else.

Yeah, the more and more I learn about what's in food, the more disgusted I am as well. And that's true actually. Vegetarianism was hard for me at first too but it came naturally after a few months
