An innie becoming an outie

My son born an innie has become an outie...idk how it happened. His belly button was definitely an innie just a couple months ago. There is no infection there or anything, just popped out.

Its likely an umbilical hernia. My son's did that too, right around the time he started walking.

What is it? He just turned 3. Is it supposed to hurt?

It's basically a weak spot in the muscle that the intestines bulge through. They usually don't hurt unless his intestines get trapped in it, then it can be life threatening. He needs to have it evaluated by a DR asap to make sure he's not at risk for that.
