SSI *D&D*

posted 19th Jan
Do you think the spending of the check should be monitored? Sorta like FS do you think there should be things off limit that the money can't purchase. For example: If a lady got an SSI check every month and just about every penny she had went to gambling or just things that were extremely unnecessary.

Absolutely not. Either they have a disability and it's their income because they can't work a normal job, or they're of retirement age. Either way, their spending shouldn't be monitored. Nobody tells you what you can spend your money on if you work for it, same goes here.

No I dont. What business is it of anyone how to regulate how people spend THEIR money. SSI is an insurance that you purchase. If god forbid you become disabled it is your right to use. Also SSI is not a lot of money (unless you made bank in your working years) it is normally enough to just make it (and sometimes not even). I dont get what gives people the idea that it is there job to regulate everyone else in the world.

I believe SSI should only be spent on things that are beneficial like car insurance, gas, etc.
I really don't like the idea of someone spending their SSI money on alcohol, or gambling, or just things they could go without, but I'm not the one who is disabled, they are, so I'm not going to dictate how they should spend their money.

No. If they want to piss it away and have nothing then go for it! Not my life.

Nope, it's their money they are given to live on. Who cares what they do with it.

Plus the cost of monitoring it would probably be quite a lot more than the actual cost of money used in whatever is deemed not allowed.

I agree with this.

No. I feel it's insulting to those who receive SSI to insinuiate that they only gamble or buy irresponsible things. It's also a pay check. It's not even close to government assistance. It's extremely hard to get accepted most of the time.

Should the money you get from your car insurance company be monitored to? Or if your house burns down? Should they make sure that you only use the mony on car/house related items? Its not welfare, its an insurance that peope pay on their whole lives.

Nope. It's theirs to spend how they wish. When it's gone it's gone and they have to live with how they spent it.

And also I want to make it clear that SSI and SSDI are different things. SSI is if a younger person is disabled or retired person. SSDI is what you receive that you have to work a certain amount of time in the last 5 or 10 years depending on your age. SSI you automatically get Medicaid if you are disabled. SSDI you do not, but you get Medicare after 2 years of being on SSDI. On SSDI you get reevaluated every 3 years. You can receive both SSDI and SSI if you have a financial need. I know someone who receives $698 on SSDI and gets $100 on SSI.

SSI isn't like food stamps at all.

If you are paying taxes right now, you are paying those who are using it now. They payed for the previous generation. Our kids will pay for us.

This is why people are worried about SSI as the baby boomers retire. There aren't enough of the younger generation paying in. To cover the amount of retirees.

We DID have to fill out a report yearly about how we spent DD's SSI check when she received them but we always spent it on supporting her so it didn't bother me
