I was using as a comparison because there are things you can not buy with FS

I think that's why they raised the percentage people pay in now. Last year it was 4.2% now it's 6.2%.

Food stamps are contributing to our debt as a nation. We borrow to feed people, help them live.

SSI is money in a treasury already available. So it's not a relevant comparison.

From what I've been told by SSI recipients, every once in a while they'll send a letter saying they want the receipts for a particular month to make sure the money is being spent on what it should be.
I said I wasn't going to dictate what they spend their money on because it's their entitlement, they're the ones who are disabled. But I'd surely hope they'd be responsible enough not to do stupid things like gamble because you really don't get a lot of money for SSI and doing things like gambling would probably be an extremely difficult habit to support on such a small amount of money.

Smurf no. I would like to see the look on the face of an 80 year old woman when someone tells her she can't spend the money that she worked for her entire life on whatever she wants lol.

My little brother gets SSI and its not alot at all, if someone was gambling it would be gone really fast. Its not enough to survive on.

Yep, that was my entire point to my post. It really isn't enough money. It may be enough to pay for rent and most of an electricity bill in my state, but if you have to pay car insurance, gas, water, groceries...You're smurfed.

I think the govt also isn't very good as spending/saving. I was reading back to the re-building effort in Iraq (just as a small small example) they were grossly overpaying American companies to come in and do jobs, people who had relationships with the Govt. When the going rate in the are for the jobs was WAY cheaper. We are crappy spenders/savers.

Yes! Luckily my brother lives with my mom so he doesn't have to pay those things, however he is required to pay my mom rent since he is 18 now. But its not enough to do much at all.

No, it's definitely not enough.
My friend is on SSI herself because she has MS and dwarfism (I think that's the politically correct term), and her son is on it as well for autism and a few other problems. Between the two of their SSI checks and her fiance's unemployment check (He's trying to find work), they BARELY survive. I mean, there's months where she doesn't have even $20 to spare.
