CIO with a 3-6 month old

posted 19th Jan
A new study in the journal Pediatrics found that training babies to sleep by letting them CIO for short periods of time not only works, but doesn't damage baby's psyche. Beginning sleep training when baby is between 3 & 6 months old is the ideal time period because after that, it gets harder as habits are more established & developmental milestones, such as pulling to standing start to interfere with sleep -Jodi Mindell Ph.D

Do you agree with the new study? if not, why?

I believe you should try to sleep train between 3-6 months but not CIO.

Dr.'s are insane. They want to know all the answers black and white. Child rearing is not that simple. And there are tons of articles, studies on both sides of that argument.

I agree, what methods would you use though?

I highly disagree. There are several articles out there that say CIO does cause damage. It always has seemed unnatural to me to leave a screaming baby. I have even tended to family members children when they started crying because it is so unnatural to just let them cry to me. And it may work for a short period of time, but it will eventually become an issue again. I have a friend who has done CIO with her daughter since around 2-3 months and it is still something they deal with on a pretty regular basis.
There are better and easier ways to help teach your baby to sleep with out ignoring them and leaving them scared and alone.

My LO is currently 4 1/2 months. Every night he goes to bed between 11:30pm-12am. Our routine is: (every other day he has a bath before bed)change his diaper, change his shirt, swaddle him, turn on his sleep sheep, lay him down, feed him his bottle until he stops eating, remove the bottle and he looks at me and slowly closes his eyes. Once he's laid down there is no screaming involved at all. At the beginning he would cry but I would pick him up and cuddle him until he stopped and then lay him down give him the bottle etc. it took less than a week to get his routine down pat.

I agree 100%. I couldn't do it if I tried. Everytime DS truly cries, I cry with him if he stays upset for more than a minute or two.

I like that, its very similar to how DS's schedule is

For the whole CIO method I look at it this way: would I like to be laid down in a bed or room and have the door shut while I was crying and just needed to be held, comforted or just simply feel loved? Nope, so why would I do it to him.

i feel the same. it's not for sleeping but when i have things to do in the house (requiring going from room to room- small house), DD starts crying when i walk out of the room with her in her exersaucer. at times (esp when sleepy) she quickly escalates into screaming. whole head red, face soaked in tears, slobber, and snot in just a couple mins. by the time i throw a load in the wash. most days i get nothing done till after MIL gets home around 4. MIL says i should just let her scream while i do stuff but i think doing that to her over and over every day is mean.

If I really need to get some stuff done and he's crying I will put him in his swing or exersaucer. If that doesn't work I put the gagnam style music video on and he just watches it(he loves the bright colours). It works wonders. I don't want him to addicted to tv so it's a last resort solution.

DS goes into a hysterical cry if I am out of sight for more than a minute as well. He's almost 9 weeks old & he hates being alone(or rather while I'm cleaning the bedroom & he's on the bed he cries when I'm out of sight or not talking to him-he only thinks he's alone)

when DD would get really fussy for a nap, i'd put her in her swing and blast music. she'd be out in no time
