Does this make sense to you?

posted 18th Jan
A girl on Fb put "it's irrevelant to dwell on the past"...This sentence does not make sense imo...I don't think she's using the word irrevelant correctly. Am I wrong?

Sorry Im bored and this is getting to me haha.

Yeah, she's using the wrong word. Irrelevant means not applicable. She's looking for the words pointless or unnecessary.

No. IMO irrelevant means not pertaining to something. So saying something is irrelevant with no context is dumb.

I think it makes sense. It means it's not appropriate to dwell on the past.

That is not what irrelevant means.

Right... so you should all inform Mariah Carey that her lyrics aren't correct.
ir·rel·e·vant

/iˈreləvənt/

Adjective

Not connected with or relevant to something.

Synonyms

irrelative - insignificant - unimportant - immaterial

Then look up the word relevant....

None of those words mean "inappropriate" to dwell on the past.

rel·e·vant

/ˈreləvənt/

Adjective

Closely connected or appropriate to the matter at hand.

Synonyms

pertinent - appropriate
If irrelevant means the opposite of relevant, does that not mean that it also means inappropriate.

Hunny... no. Irrelevant means, in layman's terms, "doesn't matter."

Ex- "His smoking habit is irrelevant because I love him for his personality." Meaning, you love him regardless of his smoking habit.

Relevant, in this example, would mean that it does matter. "His smoking habit is relevant to the reasons I'm considering leaving him."

You can't replace either of those examples with appropriate/inappropriate.

Then could the quote mean that it doesn't matter to worry about the past? I don't know it seems to be a popular quote because of Mariah Carey. It is lyrics in her song Mine Again. I'm sure this girl on fb was just posting lyrics.
