Can Someone help me with math

stuck on 2 problems that are word problems

1. Staples sells boxes of pens ($10) and rubber bands ($4). Leona ordered a total of 24 cartons for $210. How many boxes of each did Leona order? Check your answer. hint let P = Pens.


2.Walmart sells thermometers ($2) and hot-water bulbs ($6). In December, walmart's total sales were $1200. Customers bought 7 times as many thermometers as hot-water bottles. How many of each did walmart sell? Check your answer.


If you can tell me how to solve the problem at least that would be great.

x = number of pens
24-x = number of rubberbands
10x + 4(24-x) = 210
10x + 96 - 4x = 210
6x = 114
x = 19 pens
24-19 = 5 rubberbands

I can't believe its been 4years since ive been out of math. Its like having to relearn it again.

2. t(2) +b(6)=1200
t=b(7)
7b(2)+b(6)=1200
14b+6b=1200
20b=1200
b=60
t=7b, t=7(60), t=420
60x6=360, , 420x2=840
360+840=1200

hope you follow that. not sure how I came up with that.. it's been a while
maybe someone else can explain it in a way that doesnt confuse the hell out of you

Ok ladies can you help me with 2 more problems?

1) in 1955 an antique car that originally cost $3668 is valued today at $62125 if in excellent condition, which is 1 3/4 times as much as a car in very nice condition. What would be the value of the car in very nice condition?
Some of the answers i came up with: 14672, 35500

2)At General Electric, Shift 1 produced 4x as much as shift 2, General Electric's total production for July was 5500 jet engines. What was teh output for each shift?
Answer i came up with: Shift 1 4125 Shift 2 1375

I got 35500 as well

shift 1=Y, shift 2=Z
y=4z
4z+z=5500
5z=5500
z=1100, shift 2
y=4400, shift 1

how did you find your answer?

Not sure. I just tried a few things. Tried to find a formula that matched the word problem and it didn't work.

x = car in nice condition

7/4 * x = 62125

x = 62125 * 4/7

x = $ 35500

Let x = production of shift 2.
So, 4*x = 4x = production of shift 1.

x +4x = 5500
5x = 5500
x = 5500/5 = 1100 engines

Therefore,
Output of shift2 was x = 1100 engines.
Output of shift1 was 4x = 4(1100) = 4400 engines.
