The point here isn't the guns. It's the constitution and the alterations he's making to it and our government. It was set up for a specific reason and one of them was not so that the president can have complete control over the people. I think this is the point you're missing.
And I'll be damned to see friends and family go to jail all because they told the president they don't agree with his politics. That is what he just signed.

then i dont understand whats the point in having a president? If hes only supposed to be a figurehead get rid of the position entirely ... that would save the country some money

Considering you live in a country with far less freedoms than us, your opinion holds no real value to me. You don't understand what they are taking away because you never had it to start with. Hitler started curtailing speech, registering weapons, then taking them. They devolved into a fascist dictatorship in a period of about five years.

We have a government system of checks and balances. There are three government branches, with the president comprising of just one branch. Sure, he has power. But he shouldn't have absolute power. He has acted without consent of Congress on numerous occasions which is an impeachable offense. It's not that he is a figurehead without power, it's that he is a part of the whole, but he acts as if he is the whole.

While I think that was wrong too, that was a completely different kind of ban. People are throwing around the term "assault weapon" like it actually means something, but it doesn't. If I hit you with a hammer, I would be charged with assault with a weapon. Therefore the hammer was an assault weapon. All guns are assault weapons. A lot of people support the ban thinking that high powered rifles and military style guns are being banned, when the reality is that MUCH more than that is being banned. My handgun is now banned in NY, and it's just a very simple Glock 9mm.

I just think its odd that legally someone can walk into a mcdonalds with an AK47 and no one can say anything

I don't know a lot about all of the laws bc they vary by state, but it would depend on a lot of things. Whether or not the weapon is concealed, whether or not the place has it posted that no weapons are allowed, if the state requires a permit to carry that particular weapon, etc. Generally speaking, at least in my state, only law enforcement can openly carry a weapon in public. The general population has to apply for conceal and carry permit to carry a weapon, which must be fully concealed and licensed, and it's only allowed in places where weapons aren't prohibited either by law (schools, government buildings, etc) or by the owner of the property (like a "no weapons on the property" sign posted at the entrance).

So at least here, a person couldn't go into McDonalds with an AK-47. They wouldn't be able to conceal it. I think there are places that have open carry or partially conceal and carry laws, but I'm not sure if they would apply to that kind of weapon. Normally they are for self defense weapons, not hunting weapons.

Late to the party here. First, let me make this clear, I am not an Obama supporter. Quite frankly I am not a supporter of what the republican party has become either. Now, growing up, I was taught that no matter what you have respect for our president. My dad was a HUGE conservative republican and among the many things he drilled into my head that was one. No matter how you feel about him, he is our president and commands respect. I remember in school someone said something horrible about Bush, the dad, and it ended with a discussion on why our president always commands our respect, blah blah blah. Now? Psh, yeah right. A school such as the one I went to, they are probably encouraging the bashing of our president. It's really smurfing sad, man. And last, blame Obama all you want. However, this smurf has been slowly happening for a decade. I cannot travel with AF without the TSA knowing it is that time of the month for me. I cannot get a cold that requires the FBI knowing I am under the weather if I need OTC meds. This path has been slowly paved, and it isn't one political party's issue. It is all of our issue. For crying and crying about this, or that. You want a safer, more secure government? Or at least the idea you are safer? Congrats, we are getting it. And honestly, wanna know who I blame for the current mess? The repubs this past election. Yep, I blame them. For pushing the least votable schmuck they could have, and pushing out the guys who would have wiped Obama. Instead, they wanted money. Money, money money. A nice, handsome corporate face. Think things would have been different with Romney? Hell no. It would just be different freedoms we'd be losing. Hell, we may be losing the same. Either way, repubs, dems, they are all the smurfing same now. Just on different "sides." America won't wake up until they throw that smurf to the birds. But they won't. If fox news was so hell bent on our liberties and freedoms, why in the hell didn't they endorse Paul or Johnson like they did dumbo??? That's right, because they don't give a smurf about our liberties or freedoms. Sorry I just exploded on your post, Amanda lol

Yes. Look at what is constitutionally granted here versus Australia. The US is the most free country on earth. Australia limits free speech, they've taken away guns (and what'd that do for your murder rate, up 40% after that). You just think you have a lot because you don't know any better. It bugs the smurf out of me when someone who has not grown up and lived with freedom thinks it's fine for them to be restricted and ridiculous for people to bitch about it because they've lived under a restricted system to begin with.

Here we have open carry and concealed carry, so technically I can wander into McDonald's with one, but they also can ask me to leave or put my weapon in the car. I can (and do) concealed carry anywhere as long as it's not government property or posted weapons free.

Limited free speech ... ok give me one example of where my freedom of speech is limited right now, come on.

Also we have FAR more freedom and rights than you. Like the right to medical care without going bankrupt. The right for everyone for subsidized daycare so we can work. The right for paid maternity and paternity leave. The right for non married couples of all sexual orientations to have the same legal rights as married ones.

We also have the smurfing freedom of sending our kids to school without having to be terrified that they're going to be killed.

So if all that means living in a 'restricted' country, then you can shove your so called smurfing freedom up your ass.

Australia is in a way, way better position than we are right now, and their economy isn't deteriorating like ours is. They have different rights that we don't have, and their government isn't moving to try to take them away. So.....I have to disagree with you there. Oh, and Australians aren't loathed, targeted and considered dumb by every other country in the world. I'm all for patriotism but we also need to face facts.
