toddler advice

This is something I've noticed with my LO for quite some time, but her daycare brought it up yesterday as being odd and wondered what was going on, which really got me thinking. She is 2.5, very talkative, and loving. But she absolutely hates being with large crowds of kids. She will totally shut down, cry, sometimes I've witnessed her hide in the corner or put her hands over her ears and close her eyes to block out all the stimulation. And this happens when I'm with to comfort her as well. Is she just shy or is something else going on?
