chromosome testing

posted 18th Jan
My doctor told me about this very non invasive way they check the baby for any disorders.
He said I didn't HAVE to but he said it might be a good idea, plus it makes his office look good. I love him soooo I said sure why not.

All they do is do an ultrasound, and I guess measure or check the babies neck in the ultrasound and then I get a finger prick and it's done.

Has anyone had that done before? I have never heard of it but like I said I figured why not? It's something that can make his office look good AND it doesn't hurt the baby... plluuusss I can see my little stinker again.

They check the nuchal fold on the back of the neck.

Please keep in mind this measurement can be difficult to get. They have to measure it three times. Don't be frustrated if they can't get it.

But the plus side is, yep you get to see your LO again!

First Trimester screening?
I opt'd not to with my last child, but this time I will do it. My doctor told me even though it wont affect my decision to terminate or not it will help them be prepared for birth if the baby does show markers.

I had it done. They told me LO was at risk for downs based on her nuchal reading being JUST at the end of the normal range. And it was terrifying. And now DD is here and perfect. I'd probably do it again though because I'd like to always be prepared for any eventuality

I did. It was a super easy process. I wasn't offered that with my first.

Nuchal Translucency Screen. It was a "new" test when I was pregnant with my 5 year old. It's quick, relatively painless, and great - and it's another chance to see baby! I have mine scheduled for the 23rd

I chose not to do this one. I've heard its not always accurate and I didn't want to stress out during my pregnancy if something were to show up. Either way he was my baby and that test wasn't going to change anything. Turns out my son has 18q deletion syndrome and I was told it wouldn't have shown up on that test anyway. He is absolutely perfect.

Nuchal Translucency.
I opted for it because DH and I wanted to be prepared for a special needs child if necessary. Our risk came back 1:300 and baby had an increased NT, but I worried for all oof a couple of weeks.

I'm the type who'd rather be prepared for a what-if.
Plus we got to see the baby again

That's exactly why I chose to.
Yes, there are tons of things that happen that are unexpected. But if this test can detect something, I would like to be as prepared as I can be.
And at 13 weeks, getting it done, of course I was keeping the baby regardless of what the test said.

Same here.
I know surprises can happen at any time, but at least it isn't as much as a shock to hear "your baby has trisomy..." or whatever when I already knew there was a chance. Plus it helps it picking a pediatrician
