More balanced diet?

posted 18th Jan
Alright so my twin girls just turned 1 earlier this week and have been off baby puree's for probably a little over a month now and I have a harder time getting them to eat their fruits and veggies now.. any advice as to tricks into getting them to eat them or meals you all make that helped?

I know they like everything, they've never had issues before but I'm wondering if it's more a texture thing? I was debating on making smoothies for us to share.. I can usually get them to eat steamed carrots and green beans like crazy if I toss them into mac and cheese.,,

I've been letting them have some of the v8 v-fusion fruit and veggie juice mix stuff and they really like that.

And it depends on the day towards how they want to eat meats.
Lately I've just been letting them be more snacky but would really like to have them on as healthy of a well balanced diet as I can possibly try to do with two one year olds.

they frequently will eat the nutrigrain bars, raisins, cheese, yogurt, spaghetti o's or pretty much anything to do with pasta and cereal.. I bought them a box of the "very berry kix" or something of that sort. I can also get them to eat some bread with a very thin layer of PB. Animal crackers.. and pretty much anything cracker like.

I can get them to eat oatmeal every so often as well when they'll take spoon feeding from me, but a lot of days they are in the mind set that they are big girls who don't need mommy to help them eat. lol

My DD is almost 13 months and eats steamed and diced veggies still. You're giving them alot of processed foods and sugary snacks so their palate has probably changed. If I was giving my daughter kix and animal crackers or spaghetti-o's she probably wouldn't eat veggies anymore either.

Well I started giving them that because they wouldn't eat the veggies and I can't just have them not eating food at all.

If you s they eat the vegs thrown into Mac and cheese I would keep doing that. You can throw lots of puréed vegs into marinara sauce too. My daughter won't eat vegis either but. Keep trying and just add them to sauces or even hide some in quesadillas... Put a layer or carrot purée under homemade pizzas, things like that. Anyway keep offering them at meal time and sneak them in.

I've been trying I was thinking I could do mashed banana on bread or something. I really just think it's a texture thing since they are still new to eating real food, I know they like all fruits and veggies it's just a pain getting them to actually eat them. I was figuring if I did smoothies I could easily toss some kinds of veggies into it like spinach or something. I could try the sauce thing for pasta but would be hard my husband makes his own sauces and wouldn't approve of that for overall sauce use so I'd have to do to make the pureed veggies to add in each time I fed that to them.

Yeah I got them to actually eat their blueberries and bananas this morning so that's a win.
Plus I know if they see me drinking a smoothie they'll be hounding me for some. I just need to get to the commissary for some more fruit.

Nutrigrain bars are so high in sugar. So is the cereal you're giving them. That could be a reason why their taste has changed.
No harm done. You were trying to get them to eat, and alot of the so called " healthy" food is overly processed and sweetened.
I used to give my son fresh fruit or frozen ( you can buy big bags of it, keep in the freezer and I just put it in a colander and run warm water over it to defrost. It's a lifesaver) Whole grain bread. I always toast it for DS so its not so chewy.
Sorry I can't think of more examples, I'm still half asleep...
DS really eats anything we eat. Actually more cause I'm a picky eater. It's just really important to shape their palettes now, while they're young and open to new things. That means you have to avoid really sugary or salty stuff cause that'll just steer them in the wrong direction, kwim?

Well I had just started feeding them those so they would be eating something compared to nothing, they were having texture issues with starting more self feeding but it's gotten A LOT better.   They are back to their normal fruit and veggie devouring selves the more they get used to the different textures of some fruits/vegs.
