What can a throat culture reveal?

DS had a "special" culture done on Monday and today I got a phone from the doctor's office to make and appt for the results and to draw blood for more testing. I'm a little worried, any one has any idea what could come out of it? DS gets "croup" a lot and is being tested to find out the cause behind it.

Also, I know he is going to give me an extremely hard time to get his blood drawn, any advice on how to deal with it? Last time he had an IV he was 18 months and he had to be held by 4 different people to be able to contain him...he's now 5 and HATES needles.

Maybe Mono? Or strep throat... Poor baby

It's not strep and I don't think mono cause croup like symptoms. He gets croup and has a hard time breathing...

Those are the only things that I've ever been had a swab test done for, and then for the mono they went back and did a blood test. That's the only reason I suggested it.

Hopefully that's not what it is though, that was miserable. My throat swelled so much causing trouble breathing.

Hopefully they figure out what it is and get him feeling better soon. I hate when my baby girl is sick.

Yeah mono really sucks, I got it too but his symptoms don't coincide with what I went through. His croup comes and goes and his throat never swells for days and he doesn't really get a fever. I'm just worried and having to wait for his appt makes me more nervous.

mono is its own test.

a throat culture takes epithelial cells off the tonsils and "cultures" them ie: sees what/if any bacteria grows.

i had strep G or some weird smurf that the rapid strep test doesnt pick up.

Thank you...what makes me more nervous is the fact that they called me to schedule the appt, that usually means bad news. I pray that it isn't!

nah its not bad news. there would be no scheduling. just get your ass in here NOW!

It has never happened to me that way but I hope you're right.
