Only one child, but two in diapers!

I have one child, a 4.5 month old, and 2 in diapers. How can this be, you might ask?

Meet Samantha...

My 6 year old poodle/chihuahua mix. She was born with degenerative disk disease. We didn't know anything about this until she hurt her back the first time. The Dr. warned us that it was likely to happen again and each time it would get worse. She recovered fully the first time, and also the second...we weren't so lucky the third. It happened when I was pregnant, about 2\two weeks before Aiden was born. We took her to the Dr., her back legs weren't working at all. She gave her some steroid shots, and some oral meds. When those didn't work...she suggested we "put her to sleep." Not because she was in pain (tests showed that she wasn't) not because she had anything life threatening....but because her back legs were never going to fully function again, and she wasn't going to be able to control her "bathroom business.".

No way was I going to do that. I asked the vet if she could live a happy, somewhat normal life. She replied "Yes, but it's going to be a big "inconvenience". So? I don't only love my dog when she's "Normal" It's not like my feelings changed now that she's "Broken."

We make the best of it, and Sammie and Aiden share diapers

Just a random little story

Adorable. And very impressive. How do you change her diapers though?

I'm glad you kept her alive! (: She's cute....

I lost my baby puppy last year, right before I found out I was pregnant. She was playing with another dog and the other dog fell on top of her. It broke something in her and she died minutes later in my sisters arms. I adopted her after her previous owners had abused her and I believe she had some sort of disease that made her bones weak.

I think about her every day and miss her like crazy, so I know how you feel.

I cut a little hole in the back for her tail, and when the diaper needs to be changed I just take her outside, empty the used one and put on another

P.S. My Son has been dubbed "Cheeks" by my family also

That's heartbreaking! To me, it's almost on the same level as losing a child. A family member for sure.

Aww how sweet

How does she get around? Is she on like a doggy wheeler type thing? Or do you just carry her everywhere.

Aw! Yeah he looks a little like a cabbage patch kid, just like DD did. I'm really impressed by your dedication! One of my dogs isn't fixed and she gets her period and has to wear a diaper... Well when DD was a newborn she(the dog) pooped in her diaper. And it was so awful to take it off her. You are one awesome pet mommy!

I carry her around alot. She sits on me like a baby ...on my side, legs around my waste and paw on shoulder lol...so often times I have her on one arm, Aiden on the other. She can still walk a little bit, and she likes to, but she stumbles and tips sideways a lot. She's gotten quite good at walking on just her front paws though, she can go down my back porch steps like that. She's a strong girl

My friend had a miniature poodle with the same issue. she kept him going as long as she could, but he ended up getting pressure ulcers (bed sores) from his inability to walk. She put him down about a year after his final incident. His quality of life just wasn't very good at that point.

I completely understand that! If she was suffering it would be selfish to keep her here, but right now she's happy and healthy...so we're just going to keep our fingers crossed.
