14 month old and broken finger

My youngest was playing with my older boys today and got his finger caught in a door. We took him for xrays and there's a very small break on his middle finger. I'm having issues getting him to keep the splint on and I've never personally had any experience with broken fingers. I could use some tips and tricks if anyone has any.
