Adoption and Termination of Parental Rights [AR]

I'm looking online at the guidelines and terms behind a step parent adopting a child in my home state. So far all that I am seeing is that it's better if the parent that is losing their rights signs the adoption petition and the termination petition to show that it is uncontested, and that you must give proof that they haven't had contact with the child in at least 6 months.

I just feel like there is a lot more to this. Mostly in AR, but in other states too, have your DH's successfully adopted your child from a previous relationship?

If it helps, BD and I were never married, I have full custody, and he hasn't tried to see DD since Jan/Feb of last year. I'm not married now and probably won't be any time soon, but if this keeps going like this, how easy would it be for my future husband to adopt DD?

It's hard to say, because honestly, SO much can happen between now and then. He could come back into the picture, fight you for custody, anything really.

If everything stayed on THIS track, I would assume you'd have a pretty easy, "quick" step parent adoption.

Yeah, I know it's all up in the air right now, marriage isn't even a consideration for me right now. I'm just thinking about the future...I know it doesn't REALLY matter, but I'd like my daughter to have my last name should I ever get married. I don't see him fighting for custody or getting back into the picture, so sad to say, DD won't really have a dad unless I marry one for her. Ha.

My adopted dad adopted me and my brother. In Wyoming, our biological father is from Georgia. All that had to happen was my mom and my dad had to be married and our biological father had to give up custody. We even went to Georgia from June to beginning of August and in September he signed over rights to us. We got officially adopted in February.

In NC we have to put an ad in the paper for DD's bio dad to come to court and contest the adoption. She is five and he has never seen her or tried to so it shouldnt be an issue, especially since Idk where he is now.

I was afraid I would hear horror stories when it came to stuff like this. At least I know that DD has a chance of having a real father someday, both emotionally and legally.

My Grandparents legally adopted me when my mother gave up her rights. My biological father was never in the picture, but they did not put him on the birth certificate. Sooo my story may not be helpful. haha. But I hope that everything works out in the future if you choose to marry!
