First of all, ALL guns are assault weapons. The distinction is rather silly.

Secondly, I support banning them from current and previous criminals as well as those who are dangerous or at high risk for being dangerous.
I do not support banning them from responsible owners.

Why? Theyre not banning all guns, and there was a law like this before. Bush just let it expire.

The 2nd amendment is pretty clear in that it should be "well regulated"

yes. no need for anyone to have that kind of weapon. yes the government has them but only to protect its people from other countries, theyre never used on their own citizens. and this isnt the first time the government thought about the ban. there was one in place for YEARS that expired in 2004 i believe and no one had this kind of reaction to the first one that was put into place..

Even if the criminals have had their civil and gun rights restored on the basis of not having reoffended and been deemed to be rehabilitated?

Felons are never again allowed to own weapons.

Does this mean we should have no laws? I mean sex with a child is illegal, but according to your logic people do it anyways so why bother. There are a lot of people who don't do things that are illegal because of the fear of consequences such as jail time

. Hard drugs is kind of different since it is an addiction, addictions aren't something most can simply stop.

I am a convicted felon and will be getting my right to possess a firearm restored in 2016. Felons can and currently do possess firearms.

I'm not saying we should be a lawless country, but this ban has been in effect before and these crimes still occurred. Why are we wasting so much money and time on something that history has already been proven to be ineffective?

Unfortunately in this country, the best way to get help is to get arrested. If you have a mental condition and you need help, the best way to get it is to become a danger to yourself or those around you and get arrested. Otherwise, there is likely not a bed for you. The same goes for drug addicts and alcoholics who commit crimes largely based off of the need to get a fix. We need to focus on the actual problem at hand here. If someone wants to kill somebody, they are going to do it one way or the other. Sure you can try to minimize casualties, but why not focus our time and resources on how to make sure it doesn't happen at all?!

Through the state that suspended my right. I'm not a violent offender and have never been convicted of a federal crime. On a federal level, I am still permitted to possess a firearm. On a state level, I'm suspended in Florida and my state suspension is accepted in all states that are members of the interstate compact. I get my pardon from the governor in 2016 and do not need a presedential pardon.

We're wasting precious time and money with these bans. Meanwhile, ill people are screaming for more help. The onlly thing I like about any of this is that Obama is proposing more help and care for the mentally ill.

I see. I thought felons were federally prohibited from possessing firearms, thats why its a 10 yr prison term if youre found with them. I didnt realize that states had anythingto do with it.
