Crib bumpers unsafe?? Well Im not yet convinced, lets talk.

posted 17th Jan
Ok I need some opinions from all you mommies out there! I assume most of you have heard that Crib bumpers are now deemed "unsafe". Well this makes me wonder and I am not sure I am totally convinced of what "experts" are saying, I grew up with crib bumpers, almost everyone I know, have known etc has had crib bumpers when they were babies....I know many people who as kids needed them also because they had a fascination with bumping their heads or getting their limbs caught.
I am extremely cautious with what I will be having around when my son is born and want whats best for him, but I also am of the opinion that many people over react nowadays and that things like this and drinking out of the garden hose are tried and tested as (not too sound too flippiant but) not having killed me you know? So Over all what is your opinion?
What is helping you form this opinion?
And how has this worked or not worked for your children?

Would really appreciate the answers! Thanks Ladies!

theres going to be so many back and forth things saying how they are and arent safe so its sort of just up in the air what you want to do. i used the with my son

Adria was almost a year before she was in her crib, we co-slept, so she was passed the SIDS risk stage. I used them just because I had them. If I didn't have any I probably wouldn't have gone out and bought them. She still got her limbs stuck between the bars.

Really it's what you think will work best for you and your baby.

I use bumpers....but if ur affraid of suffacation or then getting caught they have mesh bumpers...but its not going to save him or her from hitting his head.

I was not comfortable with anything that could potentially restrict airflow when my kids were infants. I did not use them.

It's completely your choice, whatever you are comfortable with.

Agreed I suppose it will be awhile till this dies down a bit and we can actually make sense of it. Silly media throwing a fit and leaving us all scared of our blankets haha

I used them DD, I tucked them under the mattress at the bottom and triple tied them at the top.
For me they are more about the arms/legs getting through the cot bars I heard some sad stories of broken limbs But I also understand the flip side of suffocation if they are unsafely fitted,.
I will be using them with this baby BUT only for as long as the mattress is high enough to tuck the bottoms underneath the mattress.
As PP's have said you have to gather as much information as possible and make a sensible educated decision.

I did not use them with my children, even though both their crib sets came with them. To me, adding any kind of additional risk was unnecessary and not worth it.

But, at the end of the day, your child, your choice.

They can cause "rebreathing" which is suggested to be a leasing factor in many SIDS deaths. Babies do not have the ability to move because they can't breathe and wind up suffocating. It's great that you didn't suffer any damage from it, but knowing that children have died....should be enough to make you not use them. Cute isn't worth unsafe.

I would not be so flippant having met 2 women that lost their children to SIDS. it is fact that blankets are a sids risk to infants.
