my crib is new and the rails are so close together I dont need crib bumpers to worry about legs or arms poking through but I still use them as a cushion incase the baby rolls into the side of the crib. I love crib bumpers, I used them with my first child as well. I don't personally feel they are unsafe....people have fallen and landed on forks....forks can be "dangerous" im not gonna stop using them.

I am not trying to be insensitive, but I also am looking at the lives blankets have saved. Both sides of the spectrum.
I realize people have tragedies, one of the reasons I am looking for answers to make sure my son is safe is my own brother died when he was a baby, his crib was poorly manufactured and the screws were stripped out and he fell between the railings and the mattress frame and suffocated. I am not saying this too garner sympathy just pointing out I know people have lost their babies. but I will still use a crib for my son after my experiances...I will just be watching and looking at safety as well as sensibility.

Quoting Courtney [36 weeks]:" My mom used them with me and my brother. I used one with my son and I will be using one with this baby. ... [snip!] ... it happens.. but how often? IMO, it's much safer than my child's arm or leg getting stuck, hurt &/or bruised to hell. "

Thank you Courtney for your feedback, And I agree on looking at both angles for safety. Still trying to decide what I will do in the end when my son is born, but hopefully hearing a wide view will help me think over all areas.

Quoting 3 little monsters:" I used them but I can see how they could be unsafe, the material usually isn't very breathable and they ... [snip!] ... roll back over they could suffocate. My kids weren't big movers in their sleep though so I wasn't super worried about it. "

I agree and that is definatley a reason too think it through, based on a mothers comfort with safety and also based on your child in question. Good reply thank you!

What is up with the ridiculous comparisons?

Children suffocate enough with bumpers that they specifically advise you not to use them. They cannot physically tell their body to move when they face gets pressed into the bumper, which can cause DEATH. Is that not motivation enough? An adult using a fork is an absurd comparison to making sure your child doesn't die because you didn't feel like heeding warnings about SIDS.

Um, come again?

How is a blanket going to save your kids life?

This is not the middle ages, you know.

Both of these links give a little more info, Its not something I had already heard of but in the top link it does state that the thin bumpers (which we have) pose less of a risk.
I don't think it has put me off using the ones i already have though as our cot is very wide (cot bed) AND the bumpers are very thin anyway. I'm more surprised that I hadn't heard of it before

Quoting *Mac and Keagan's Momma*:" We used breathable bumpers for our kids. They prevented them from getting limbs caught. But as everyone has said it's your child so it is your choice."

Thank you and I will be looking into those as well and weigh all my options, do you mean that they where mesh? or what kind of material?

Yeah outside.

I thought thermostats were universal in homes at this point.
