Rental problem question

posted 17th Jan
Okay so. I just moved out of my previous house due to the landlord being INSANE, he was harassing me throughout the month asking if I would have his money for rent, which I mean usually adults do so im not sure why he was so freaking worried about it. (It was my first month in the house).
It got to the point where he was harassing me every day about this which made me really un easy, so i decided we should probably move if the landlord is going to be insane. So I didnt pay him rent due to the fact that I decided to move.
(NO lease was signed)
Well when we moved in there was a few house hold things left in there that he told me I could have if i wanted them, they were all things i could use so i said sure. well when i moved out i took them with me assuming that because he told me i could have them it wasnt anything to talk about.
Well now hes going ape smurf saying hes going to charge me over it. What should i do? I mean if i had a truck i would just bring it back if its that big of a deal but i dont.

First off you shouldn't have at least given him notice. Return to items that are his. I personally would be pissed too.

So. He offered the furniture on the assumption you were living there for more than a month. Then you took his stuff knowing he wasn't quite right in the head? I'd say let him bill you and then pay or take his things back since you don't know how much he's going to charge for said items and he could damage your credit.

I would send him a letter or txt (that you can keep copies of) and tell him that he could come get the stuff, or just find a way to take it back to him if you dont want him to know where you live now

I think i will give him that option, i mean i wasnt trying to steal anything! I am not worried about him finding out where I live I mean he cant come here.
I guess I will give him the option.

ok so you did not pay your landlord rent and then you took his household things, um is that right?? do think it was fair not to pay him rent and then take his household items and think it was ok?? seriously id be pissed if you stayed rent free and then took my house items

When someone who is crazy like that says that you can have something, he probably actually means you can use them while you're there. I think they expect you to be a mind reader

Even though you did leave, you probably do owe him money since you stayed there and I'm assuming you also used the electricity and such. I'd tell him that you made a mistake taking the things and that you're sorry, take them back ASAP and pay whatever amount you owe him for the time you were there because even though he was a bit crazy, he can call people and have it added to your tenancy record. It wouldn't look good for you to have a former landlord's statement saying that you stole from their property and left without notice. We aren't currently signed on our lease and we still have to give 2 weeks notice and pay the rent up til we leave.

Either pay for the items or find a way to take it back.

if no paperwork was signed then he can't even prove you did live there lol ask him why he's charging you for furniture he gave to you or how much he wants for it. He sounds paranoid anyways

I refuse to keep children in an environment like that, who is to say he wouldnt have slapped an eviction notice on my door mid month, i wasnt about to pay the man to smurf me around because that was exactly where it was going it is a much longer story obviously..

Well i dont drive, or have a truck to return anything as we rented a uhaul to move, but he is more than welcome to take his things back lol, I would never steal from someone thats just wrong, I just truly believed he ddnt want it!

Okay I have to ask. Was he asking for the rent of the month you were already there? As in you didnt pay for the month yet but were living there? Or was he harrassing you about the upcoming month?

The up coming month, my rent had been paid in full a week prior to the harassment
