My mom and I run a private no-kill shelter and we do break them up....BUT, we usually use our judgement on how to go about doing it.
My dad tried pulling two apart once by himself and one bit him through his work boot, which is thick as hell!
The safest way to break up a dogfight requires two people. Each person grabs the back feet of one of the dogs, then pulled from one another.
Then, once, they're apart, quickly encircled them until they back away or put them in a pet porter/cage/pen/etc to keep from them curling. Sometimes, water works too.

It's diff if u know what you're doing. And your comfort level doing it.

I would never get involved in a dog fight. I'd rather not risk getting attacked, myself.

screw the dog fight. there were like 2-3 times where she was _ close to being able to reach her dog. with about 5-6 (probably more) people in the MTV crew out there it shouldn't have been that hard to put her kid down and chase the damn dog. especially a $1300 dog.... :|

This is true!
There have been times we've had to let them fight it out; usually one or both will tire-out and then we can better get a handle on the situation. This is only if they're evenly matched...In the case of Chelsea's dog, there probably wasn't much she or anyone could've done to help her dog. A 50-60 lb dog against a 20 lb one is just awful.
Also, from what I've read, they were playing prior to the attack and since Huskies are very active, playful workers it's possible he may have played with him too rough, just didn't realize his own strength?

Never would I risk my life for a dog like that. Maybe if I had a large stick to beat the other dog but would that be wrong too? Uou can bet that the dog's owners would be replacing my pet though.

I doubt the crew is allowed to intervene. I'm sure they have to sign some sort of contract.

even if the crew wasn't there i still would have put my kid (of course, if they could walk) down to pick the dog up.

Why? What if the dog went after your kid instead? Or your kid wandered into the road? Or the dog attacked YOU? That's so unsafe.

she said on the phone with her dad that the husky was still next to her dog. She'd be a dumbass to put her daughter down to risk that.

They don't care...I've seen some horrible dog fights (not illegal ones) and with exceptions depending on their temperament, breed, etc, most block out external stimuli when fighting. I've tried this method before and the stick, which was huge, broke before the dog let go.
There is a thing called a "breaking stick" that's usually a hammer handle that is sawed or shaved into a V shape at one end. You use it on the dog that has the hold. It's inserted into the side of the mouth between the back molars and then pried upwards for a release.
Collars are tools too. If it's twisted enough, it chokes the dog out. Yeah, it sounds horrible but if he can't breathe, he can't fight.

Oh god... Id just put my cat down after that. I couldnt imagine seeing my baby like that. Id want to kill any animal that hurt mine.

I just now remembered... I have always hated German Shepherds. Our neighbor in Texas had vicious German Shepherds and he would just say "Dont come near my property" but yet his fence sucked and the dogs always got out. They knocked me off my bike and attacked my dog but she managed to get away. We had a STEEL covered front door and my dog high-tailed it so fast into the door that she knocked it open. She was scared smurfless. My dad threatened the owners with a handgun saying he would kill the dogs if they ever came onto our property. Their gate was finally fixed and the dogs were put on chains.

But ever since I HATED German Shepherds. We used to watch one I actually liked but I still dont really like them. Then 3 years ago my sheltie was attacked by a German Shepherd that was seemingly the sweetest dog ever. He fractured his skull and still has a huge bump from it. Thank God Lily wasnt there.

So what if the dog turned on you or your kid after that? You'd seriously set down your child and put your kid in harms way? Protect your child first and THEN an animal.
