Worried about my son talking.

posted 16th Jan
I know he is barely 16 months old and still young but all he says is Mama for anything food, and the rest is DA DA DA DA DA! or da for dog. and nothing else really other then like a couple noises we make at each other when we do certain things.
He is mostly really distracted by putting things together and where they belong like taking all the pots and pans out then putting them back.
I pretty much know what he wants most of the time too but still I see sooo many kids his age dance and say different words he won't even dance for me =/

i'm trying to remember but i don't think my daughter "talked" until 18 months. it's good that he is making different types of sounds.....
as far as dancing for you... i'm not following you on that one......

I totally understand how you feel. I think you should consider early intervention for your son as he may need speech therapy. the reason I tell you is because i have a 13, almost 14 month old that still haven't said a word. She make noises but that is it. she gets early intervention and currently recieve physical and occupational therapy due to her being developmentally delay. I am currently waiting for the evaluation for speech and if they find her delay for speech then she will get speech therapy too. I know that children 12 month old should be saying 5-7 words if not more. Hope this help.

My son is 22 months and still dont talk! I keep hearing it is fine. Especially since he dont have any other sibilings (well one on the way) lol & he is a boy! He picks up everything else but words.. Which I heard boys tend to do! My doc said she is not to concerned but we may have to think of speech therapy in the near future.. Im going to give him a lil more time till I decide on that!! I think one of his biggest problems is he has no toddler/kid interaction. Im a SAHM so he doesnt go to daycare or anything. He does understand me though!

Oh have they fed you a bunch of lies

I think early intervention can be a great thing however it seems like every other kid is in early intervention these days. They are making mothers worry themselves sick thinking something is wrong with their child because they arent saying 5-7 words by 12 months etc.

Anyways! OP, my son only said a few words and was very shy until around 2 and now he will not stop! He's learning new words everyday, saying sentences, counting etc.

That's absolutely ridiculous. Poor child hasn't even been given a chance to develop on her own. My oldest didn't say a word until 18 months, and didn't start actually talking until she was 2.

I remember when my DD was six month old. I took her to one apoitment and I told her doctor how I was concern because she was still not rolling. I remember her checking her and she saw my baby was not holding her weight but told me she wasn't too concerned but to give me a piece of mind she other for an apoitment to be schedule for a month from that day to see a neurologist and she told me that if withing that time my baby started rolling to go ahead and cancel the apoitment. Well, the time came and by that time she was seven month and she still hasn't roll and the neurologist who saw my baby said that infact she was delay and he refered me to see the social worker at the clinic that she can make the referal for an agency to do the evaluations on her. She was found to be delay and that is when they started both therapies. Since that time my baby also saw a genetic doctor who found out she had two chromosomal abnormalities one dealing with speech delay and learnign disability. My baby was born with acid reflux disease and was seing a gastrointerologist until she was eight month old. She was also hypotonic, still iswhich mean she has low muscle tone. to make the long story short, I am so grateful that her doctor listen to my worry because other wise we would not have been able to find out all these things that were going on with my baby and I know the earlier they get intervention the better the outcome is.

DD started saying those words at 6 months and was talking in a few word sentences by a year. By 18 months she was speaking full sentences, and by 2 she could be fully understood by strangers.

Every kid is different though... Based on my experiences I would be concerned, but my daughter was advanced in speech. By the sounds of the other posters it's normal and as llong as he understand what you're saying I wouldn't worry too much!

My pedi told me all they look for at a year is Mama, Daddy and one other word.

If you are really concerned talk to your pediatrician.
