Quoting GL♣PB:" I am currently looking up reviews on different dentists to take my two year old son for the first time.. ... [snip!] ... in the back. I would prefer to be there if my son is awake, I just want to know if this is normal before I continue looking"

I would be calling the dentist and ask about that because I don't think that is normal or even a true review. I would also let the dentist know about said review and the website it is on so they can clear it up. However maybe it is true then I would not go there because I am not going to let people around my kids without me there.

I have always been allowed back with my son or allowed to look through the window at him.. I took him to Kool Smiles. I dont know if they have one where you live or not.

The one we went to like that was horrible, they used this "papoose" thing to basically tie down my son to the exam table and he screamed the whole time. That happened when he was 2 and until recently he was completely afraid of dentists (he's 11 now).

I'd never take my kids somewhere that doesn't allow me in the back ever, ever, ever again.

Not normal at all. That would be very traumatic for a 2 year old.

My pediatric dentist won't let me back...and the regular dentist my 11 yr old sees won't let me back, either. I'd say it's pretty normal.

eh I don't know.. She got amazing reviews, then one.. not so good review.. at all.
She is the first dentist I pulled up though that had good reviews from my minute list that our insurance allows.. so I wanted to double check before I moved on.. to the next haha

this was where that happened, although it was almost 10yrs ago so maybe they have since changed that policy.

I think for a child's first visit, and especially given his age, the dentist might allow you back there. I went back with my youngest for her first visit, and she was 4. I don't go back with my 9 year old, though.

Some places don't, they say it's distracting for the child. Just keep looking for one that will let you back

Try tomorrow? Just find a place you are comfortable with. I haven't taken my oldest to the dentist yet and he is going to be 2

Maybe they don't allow more than one person back with child at a time which I can understand bc most of the exam rooms are small at dental offices.
When I took my then 15 mo to his first appt they did this awesome lap to lap technique to examine him. The dentist and I sat knee to knee and my son sat in my lap facing me and leaned back into dentist's lap. That made things much easier for DS.
